r/Banking on Reddit: Does Capital One 360 automatically send you a debit card?
April 29, 2019 -

I just opened an account online, downloaded the app, and received an email with my account confirmation etc. But nowhere in the email does it say anything about the debit card that should come with the new account. Sorry if this post is the wrong place. I’m still getting used to reddit as I don’t use it often. Thank you.

r/CapitalOne on Reddit: Discover Debit Card Megathread
September 24, 2025 -

Hi all,

The past few weeks have seen a significant uptick in posts related to the new Discover network debit cards that are rolling out for 360 Checking accountholders. This post aims to answer any questions you may have about the rollout, and serve as a discussion hub so the subreddit is not overcrowded with many posts about the same thing.

What we know

Capital One has started the process of converting their debit card portfolio from Mastercard over to the Discover network. All newly issued debit cards for Capital One 360 Checking accounts will be Discover debit cards. For existing debit Mastercard cardholders, the transition to Discover is being done in phases, with no regard to expiration dates. There is more information in the below links.

  • Capital One official product page and FAQ for the 360 Checking debit card

  • Capital One official page and FAQ for the debit card network transition to Discover

Key takeaways from the FAQs

  • Once your Discover debit card is activated, your debit Mastercard will stop working. Some recurring transactions may go through, but your debit card information should be updated ASAP anywhere you have it saved to avoid interruptions.

  • You can delay activating your Discover debit card and keep using your debit Mastercard for some time. Conversations with customer service representatives have revealed that your debit Mastercard will stop working by the end of January 2026, if you do not activate the Discover card first.

Some FAQs not answered by Capital One, or answered in corporate speak

  • Why is this happening?

    • Back in May 2025, Capital One acquired Discover, which of course owns the Discover payment network. It's simply a smart business move for Capital One to leverage the network which they now own and increase usage and adoption by moving their debit cards over to the Discover network.

  • How does this affect me, like really? Beyond the obvious stuff like having to update my info.

    • Capital One can gloat all they want about how Discover is accepted at "99%" of places that take credit cards in the US. The fact of the matter is that Discover is not as widely accepted as Visa or Mastercard, both in the US but especially abroad. If you regularly travel internationally, you should carry alternative forms of payment (e.g., credit cards or debit cards from other banks). Domestically, acceptance is mostly fine but you may run into the occasional merchant that doesn't accept Discover. Sometimes it could be a store or restaurant, other times it may be your utility company. It shouldn't happen often, but it can still be frustrating when it does. The good news is that with all these new Discover cards out in the wild, adoption and acceptance should increase over time.

  • What about cash withdrawals at ATMs?

    • Capital One is still a member of the Allpoint and MoneyPass ATM networks, so you will still be able to withdraw cash fee-free at participating ATMs in the US, Canada, Mexico, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Outside of these countries, you might still be able to withdraw cash, but you will pay ATM fees. Unfortunately, there are many countries in which you won't find a single ATM that takes Discover.

  • I'm having payment issues with merchants that supposedly accept Discover. What's going on?

    • This rollout has not been without incident. Capital One is still working out some kinks, and it's unfortunate that customers are being negatively affected. Try calling the customer service phone number on the back of your card whenever you have a declined transaction.

  • Can I still use my debit card with apps like Venmo and PayPal? And mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay?

    • Yes, but with some caveats. Outgoing Venmo/PayPal payments will still work just fine, but instant transfers into your bank account (which typically come with a fee) will not work. Google Pay compatibility should be fine, but Capital One is aware of an issue that, as of the writing of this FAQ (9/24/25), is preventing the card from being added to Google Pay and is working on a fix. Apple Pay functionality is reportedly working fine, but you may run into issues with specific merchants that don't accept Discover credit cards but do accept Discover debit cards (e.g., Costco). Your debit card on Apple Pay/Google Pay will not work in those cases; you'll have to use your physical card.

  • What's that about Costco?

    • To clarify, Costco USA does accept Discover/Pulse debit cards in-store. You will need to insert the physical card to make the transaction PIN-enabled for it to go through as debit. Tap-to-pay and mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay will not work. Costco does not accept Discover credit cards in-store, nor do they take any form of Discover online.

  • What about my Capital One credit card(s)?

    • There are no official details yet on that front, so they're safe for now. However, Capital One has already confirmed that they plan to move some of their credit card portfolio over to the Discover network as well. Rumors point to the migration starting sometime next year (2026), likely after most or all of the new debit cards have been issued. Subprime cards like the Platinum are likely first in line.

  • Can I still post on r/CapitalOne about this?

    • Posts that include genuine questions or data points, or that provoke thoughtful discussion are still allowed. Posts that are simply unhelpful complaints or otherwise do not add value to the community may be removed, and users may be redirected to this megathread. This is the only way to ensure that important discussion can still happen while not crowding the subreddit with repetitive posts. Thanks for understanding!

  • Will you keep us updated?

    • Absolutely. Us mods, we're merely volunteers, but we genuinely enjoy helping people out and we'll be trying our best to update these posts and keep you informed on any future changes. This includes posting FAQs and megathreads like this one, highlighting helpful posts from our users, answering questions, updating our wiki, and more. Thanks for sticking with us!

P.S. We'd like to use this opportunity to encourage our users to use credit cards in place of debit whenever possible. Using debit cards is risky, because it could directly expose your bank account to fraudsters. With credit cards, as long as you can pay the statement balance in full every month, you could pay no interest, have better security and fraud protection, better cardholder benefits, and rewards (on cashback or travel cards).

For those with joint accounts, do both of you receive RENEWAL debit cards? I didn’t , only hubby did.

I looked at my mobile app and my account info shows me as secondary account holder.

There are “replace missing card” and “replace damaged card” options but I don’t see an option to specify that it’s just my card I want to request (and not the primary account holder’s card).

I really don’t like that COne doesn’t have secure email where this would be just one email consisting of two sentences (love Chase for this) instead of digging through their phone customer service and it would take way way more than 10 minutes on the phone to resolve. Eno help is useless.

December 14, 2024 - Though, keep in mind if you open up other checking accounts you will only have the one debit card. They let you switch it in the app to what checking account you want it attached to. ... Thanks! That’s actually useful. I’m leaving from Bank of America so I hope capital one does good!

I opened a 360 Checking for the 250 bonus last week, and got my debit card today. My wife has her own account and I knew what the debit card looked it, but to my surprise, the word ‘Debit’ on my card was now all capitalized and placed directly under the chip, and the Mastercard logo was removed from the front of the card. When I turned the cars around, that’s when I realized I received the new Capital One Discover Debit card.

Along with the paperwork I got for the card was the benefits guide . . . The Capital One Debit Mastercard benefits guide 🤦‍♂️

I just called to order a debit card for my 360 Performance Savings and was told they no longer offer one.

The branch by my house closed and I completely understand that move. So, as you close locations why not offer Debit cards.

This makes no sense to me. Look forward to a better understanding.

r/personalfinance on Reddit: Capital One says we can only have 1 debit card for our joint account?
September 15, 2023 -

My fiancé and I opened a joint checking account about a year ago with capital one. We were supposed to receive two cards after opening the account, one in my name, the other in hers. My card came, hers did not.

We have called numerous times saying they need to send another card in her name and they repeatedly tell us there can only be one card on the account. It was something to do with the fact that we have other accounts but I don’t get that. I have two capital 1 cc’s, and I believe she has one as well, though I’m not sure.

We’re about to pull our money out and close the account because sharing one card for a joint account is really screwing up our finances, cause whoever doesn’t have it has to reimburse themselves all the time.

So A, is this true? Is capital one just crazy and won’t let you have two cards?

B, where do you advise we take our money. Somewhere we can have a card in my name, and a card in her name for a checking account.

EDIT: I actually searched relatively extensively on the answer to this prior to posting but it seems I’ve now found it.

If you(on person) have two checking accounts with capital one, they will only issue you a single debit card to be used for both accounts. They expect you to use the app to switch which account the card draws money out of when you swipe.

r/personalfinance on Reddit: Second Capital One 360 checking account, debit card issue
June 9, 2020 -

Good evening folks, I recently opened a new, joint capital one 360 account. This is my second 360 checking account (let’s call it account B). I already had another 360 checking account (let’s call that account A). The problem I ran into when I was trying to use a Capital One ATM is that I can only access account A through the ATM machine, no options to access account B. I tried multiple times, but the ATM machine does not show any options for account B. I called the customer care, was told that I can have only 1 debit card and access only 1 account through the debit card (at the ATM). The online portal shows both accounts without any issues (and the credit card account as well), but as per customer care, I cannot access account B through my debit card at all. This sounded very strange. I was expecting that they would link both accounts to my debit card (that was issued when I opened account A) or may be send me another debit card for account B. The terms and conditions from 5/20/20 states otherwise though- “automatically link each additional 360 checking account to the debit card”.

What’s your experience? What action do you recommend?

r/OneFinance on Reddit: Any advice regarding Capital One 360?
February 3, 2022 -

First of all, I recently opened an account with zeta and I’m genuinely happy with them overall. However, since I’ve been burned twice now…I’m looking at backup plans.

Im thinking I can open up a bunch of savings accounts with capital one that I have one monthly transaction (so I don’t go over the 6 transactions per month limit) and that way I would have made my own makeshift “one finance” account. The only thing I would be missing is the ability to assign a card to a pocket…but I only need that for groceries and gas a majority of the time anyway.

Any thoughts from the crew would be appreciated.

ETA: Thanks everyone for your insights. fidelity cash management is my backup plan. I spoke with their CS today. They offer UNLIMITED subaccounts (and they can be joint accounts) with their own debit cards. The only con I see outside of a typical online bank is that you can’t change the order in which you view your accounts.

Honestly, if I hadn’t just moved everything a month ago, I would just move to this option now because fidelity isn’t going anywhere lol.

May 21, 2025 -

I’ve been debating between opening a Capital One 360 or a Discover checking account (the one with the 1% cashback). I’ve already looked into the features, but I’m more interested in how they actually work day to day.

If you’ve used either one or both, what was your experience like? How’s the app? Any issues with transfer times, fraud alerts, ATM access, or customer service?

Capital One has the advantage when it comes to physical locations and ATMs. Discover’s cashback sounds good, but I’m not sure if it ends up being worth it or if there are any restrictions they don’t really advertise.

If you’ve used both, which would you recommend and why? I would appreciate any insight and thanks in advance!

We just switched from BofA to Capital one. My husband and I have each their own account and we have one joint account. I just found out that capital one won't send you a second debit card!! WTF. With BofA I had my personal account and the joint and two cards.

For example we pay our groceries with our joint account. Now I have to switch back and forth online to switch between accounts when I want to use my debit card. That's ridiculous! Also, not all company's allow auto pay from your routing and account number so you have to enter the debit card. How am I supposed to do that if I only have one card for both accounts!?

Was anyone able to get two debit cards from them?

r/personalfinance on Reddit: Should I move a large savings balance from Capital One 360 to a higher‑yield online account?

Looking for some advice on whether it’s worth moving a large savings balance for a bit more interest, and which bank you’d recommend.

Current setup:

  • I keep my emergency fund and extra cash in a Capital One 360 Performance Savings account. Current APY is around 3.3%.

  • I also have Capital One checking for everyday use.

What I’m considering:

  • Moving most of that money to a high‑yield online savings account paying around 4.0–4.2% APY.

  • I’m looking at options like Openbank (by Santander) and LendingClub, but I’m open to other well‑known, FDIC‑insured banks.

  • I’d keep a buffer in Capital One and occasionally move money back from the new HYSA to Capital One when needed for spending or short‑term goals, so easy external transfers are important.

My priorities:

  • FDIC‑insured, reputable bank.

  • No minimum monthly deposit or direct‑deposit requirements or debit‑card spend hoops to get the top rate.

  • Decent app/website and customer service.

  • Reasonable transfer limits and not‑insane holds when moving a large balance.

Questions:

  1. Is it worth moving from ~3.3% at Capital One to something around 4.0–4.2% for a large savings balance?

  2. Which specific banks would you recommend right now for this use case (no deposit requirements, good UX)?

  3. Any experiences (good or bad) with Openbank, LendingClub, or similar HYSAs when moving large amounts via ACH?

  4. Anything to watch out for around transfer limits, holds, or account opening?

Thanks for any insight or recent experiences.
