Do you own no other cookware? I wouldn't recommend using a Dutch oven for literally everything. They're great for soups, stews, braises, for baking bread, but I would want a frying pan to saute veggies and meat. Seasoned cast iron is going to be more durable. You can't use metal utensils on enamel, and if you heat enamel with no oil or food in it, you can damage the enamel. Also, once it starts chipping, the entire piece needs to be tossed. However, enamel doesn't react with your food, you can cook anything in it and not have to worry about whether the food will dissolve seasoning and you'll have to re-season it, and enamel is generally easier to clean. Lodge Dutch oven: all cast iron or enameled?

What is the community opinion on the lodge enameled dutch oven?
It's sort of six of one. You'll love the Le Creuset and it'll last forever with basic care, while the lodge might have to be replaced someday but for 1/5 the price or whatever you'll still get many great years out of it! Hard to go wrong More on reddit.com

Lodge Dutch Oven
For the price point, Lodge is about the best quality you can get. Most people who want a dutch oven but don't want to go all in and risk ruining a $300 Le Creuset or Staub usually go with a Lodge. I hear their customer services is good, too. Definitely go for a Lodge, but get the size and shape that makes the most sense to you... I know some people who buy or are gifted dutch ovens and they never use them because they bought a ludicrously large size, or they accidentally bought the bread oven, or they only want to use pots that can be dishwashed, etc... I suggest starting with a 4.5 or 6 quart DO (with a lid) and seeing how much you like using it. You can even start with one that has no enamel if you're worried about scratching it. r/cookware on Reddit: Lodge Dutch oven: all cast iron or enameled?
September 1, 2024 -

So I am in the market for a new dutch oven that will be my work horse. I will be using it for sautéed veggies and meats, soups, stews, even baked rice and bread.

From what I've seen from my research, cast iron seems to be the way to go but maintainence seems to be easier on enamel. I've never cooked with enamel, but is the upgrade worth it? I can be a bit clumsy so I'm concerned with the durability and I've seen it's a no no when it comes putting enamel in the oven for baking bread.

So are lodge enamel any good? Or should I stick with the cast iron?

December 31, 2015 - I bought a lodge enameled Dutch oven recently. It's been on the egg up to 450 a few times and no problems yet. Also clean up has been super easy with no staining ... I'm a bit of a cast iron nut, not suggesting I know more than anyone else, but I do like collecting and using the stuff (just added another 9 pieces today).

November 10, 2022 - Lodge tends to be thicker, heavier and rougher finish. I'd look at Field. They only have one size though, but it's on the smaller side at 4.5 quarts. https://fieldcompany.com/products/field-cast-iron-dutch-oven Others that have cast iron dutch ovens: Smithey Finex Borough Furnace Stargazer, Lancaster and Butter Pat also do cast iron, but I don't think any of them make dutch ovens.

Answer: See Beth Goldowitz’s post regarding cast iron cookware. She knows what she's doing! Don't use abrasive or chemical (scouring powders, bleach, etc.) or metal scrubbers (Brillo, stainless Scotch Brite). These will erode the seasoning. I use plastic a scrubber in stubborn cooked-on food - ...
