Can you varnish over chalk paint?? | Houzz UK
I've been searching the net for hours trying to find out if you can actually just paint over a chalk paint (rustoleum) with a poly varnish. It's not the same brand. I could wax but I get a blotchy finish and worry it's not durable enough for a dining table top and will mark super easily.

I've recently painted my closet with chalk paint. The multi varnish I used turned out to be really yellow after drying off. How to make it white again without repeating the whole process again?
I'm guessing that you used oil based polyurethane? Any oil based clear will have a yellow appearance and will get more yellow over time. You need to use a waterbased clear. As far as fixing it, I would lightly sand, apply another coat of paint, then apply a couple coats of the waterbased clear. More on reddit.com

June 1, 2023 - But most chalk-painted pieces will be sealed with a wax topcoat. Now you don’t have to sand, but you “have to” remove the wax. (In my research, there is a paint product that claims you don’t have to remove the wax at all. Just paint right over it.

How to prep furniture for chalk paint
May 22, 2023 - If the varnish is damaged or flaking, it will benefit from sanding first. Don't be tempted to skip this step because if you do, it won't be long before your paint is flaking and you will have wasted your time, energy, and paint. That's why good preparation is so important before chalk painting furniture. ★Tip★ I had great results painting chalk paint straight over a varnished chest of drawers.

Wax or Varnish on Chalk Paint? Let the battle commences!
September 7, 2024 - The only thing really to watch with a varnish is that if you have a stain that may be prone to bleed, a varnish will ‘pull it through the paint’ more than a wax, so a good stain blocker is a must. Yo people, I lay it for Y’all to play it out! Tell me what you think by leaving a comment below. Please share your experiences, good or bad for both. That way I’m sure a winner will emerge based on your feedback. Who would have thought that using wax or varnish over chalk paint could have been such a difficult choice?

Hi all, looking for some advice please!
I’m trying to upcycle an old TV unit. My second project, first was a disaster so I’m a bit apprehensive about it.
I’m painting it with a couple of coats of Rustoleum chalk paint. As the surface of this is going to be used (obviously to place TV etc) I’m thinking I will need to seal it? But with what?
Researching on Google is very conflicting. Seal it, don’t seal it. Use wax, avoid wax. Paint it, spray it etc...
Can anyone give me some advice so my painted piece will last and handle the usual wear and tear? I am based in U.K.

Just did a paint job on a bedroom set in chalk paint. The rustoleum chalk clear coat actually came out really nicely. I did not want to have to wax the furniture so I chose this over all other methods and really like the results especially the durability and ability to clean it easier.
