Denise is totally correct about the possibility of bleed through with old, dark furniture finishes. I experienced it first-hand with white Annie Sloan challk paint over an old piece that had a reddish mahogany-like finish on it. It is extremely frustrating to spend the time painting and then find there is a pink stain bleeding through your paint so save yourself a ton of time and headaches and spray or paint your piece with Shellac first. Don't even bother with any other product. I tried a stain-blocking primer first and it didn't work; I still had the bleed through problem. Shellac is what the Annie Sloan chalk paint website recommends. Answer from Shari on hometalk.com

r/homeimprovementideas on Reddit: Chalk paint over existing wood with glossy finish
September 2, 2020 -

I want to paint chalk paint over top of my existing coffee tables. They are made of wood with a coating of brown wood paint and a thick glossy coat on top. I have a few questions:

  1. Could I use an orbital hand sander to take off the glossy coat?

  2. What should I use as a primer so the chalk paint sticks to it, if any?

  3. Do you have a recommendation of the brand of chalk paint?

  4. Do you think chalk paint is a bad idea if I can't get the glossy finish off?

  5. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

In my experience, the amount of prep you put into a piece is directly related to the quality of your finished piece. I'll give you somewhat of a guide to get you started. Get some TSP or TSP alternative and some gloves. Follow instructions on your package to mix. Use a thin cloth (old t shirt) to scrub all over, especially cracks and crevices because they hold the most dust and dirt. Orbital hand sander/hand sand all surfaces (including those cracks and crevices). You don't need to sand a ton in one spot, especially if you're not positive that it's real wood and not MDF with a veneer on top. Wipe the entire piece down with a damp cloth (keep rinsing to actually remove the sawdust and not just move it around). After all this, you have two choices. If the finish is still a bit shiny, I would use a primer like Zinsser Bondz (it's made for shiny surfaces). OR, if it's not shiny after sanding and wiping down, you can paint it directly with the chalk paint. I do not love chalk paint, but there are many who do, so YT is your friend, but be aware that many on there are not prepping their items well (or at all) before chalk painting directly. These pieces may look good today, but what about in a year? You also need to seal the chalk paint in some way--often times that I've seen, it's been done with multiple layers of thin wax. As for brands, Annie Sloan has a great reputation for quality products, but can be harder to find because not sold online (that I could find in my few minutes of looking). I did get some when it first became a thing on pinterest, but had to drive 35 miles to find a brick and mortar that stocked it. I wish you luck with your tables--dm if you get stuck. I'll help if I can.

I’ve used a few different chalk paints over the years. I do think a light sanding is helpful but depending on how thick the gloss is you may get a better finish if you are more thorough. Primer is probably not necessary but I have primed beforehand when I’m going from one extreme color to another. And the one thing I have regretted is not sealing the chalk paint. Some items don’t get much wear but my nightstands have been beat down on the tops and now I’ll need to repaint and seal them. I know this response is vague but hope it helps.

Now, on the advice on several websites and my friend you cannot leave bare chalk paint.

To me this begs the question, why use it then?

Now, on the advice on several websites and my friend you cannot leave bare chalk paint. You need to have some sort of finish on top of it. Several of the tutorials talk about using wax / paste wax.

With deference to any of them, I think they've missed the point. Unless its particular qualities are what you want to see in the finished item why use chalk paint in the first place?

This same argument extends almost universally to all finishes — why do you choose to use any product? For example, if you want the protection provided by varnish you use varnish, if you want the low-sheen 'natural wood' look of an oiled finish you use oil.

With paint it's not much different. You pick — or that should be, you should pick — based mainly on the look and level of protection you require (with some financial and practical considerations thrown in as well of course).

Varnishing chalk paint is basically just silly, unless there are other reasons to be using that paint to begin with, e.g. to use up some remaining chalk paint before it dries in the tin. But as a general principle, they make paints that look, feel and perform much the same as varnished chalk paint, without the need to overcoat with another product. It just makes sense, both money- and time-wise to use a product like that instead.

In short, I am using chalk paint on a table that would very well see some wear and tear. More than likely it will come into contact with liquids. I was considering using wax as a top coat but now I am not so sure. In this scenario what should I consider using for a top coat finish?

Wax is, as that quote you included rightly says, a very poor protective finish.

Wax always has been and always will be primarily a surface polish. Unfortunately that fact has become a little buried in recent years, partly because of the finishing industry's use of flowery (read: inaccurate) language when promoting their products. Wax adds shine and a modicum of extra water-resistance because it makes watery liquids bead up on the surface, just like on a well-waxed car, but this is not actual waterproofing because in actual fact wax is quite porous. If you want a truly water-resistant surface on wood you use varnish or lacquer.

To summarise my recommendations:

  • use chalk paint for the look of chalk paint;
  • if you need a more durable surface simply don't use chalk paint.
