PICK ONE: What's your favourite era and why?

20th century is by far my favorite period. I believe it's the most diverse when it comes to thematic tone/mood, creative orchestration, emotional expression, and musical style. Here, you'll find some of the most exotic 'avant-garde' works as well as the most accessible simplistic pieces all within the same century. There are also a lot more pieces that haven't been given a good listen yet, so there's SO MUCH to discover! Composers are much freer than ever before, so they can finally write down more deeply personal music that may sound 'non-traditional' in order to convey what they could be going through or what may be happening around them. Sure, there was wild experimentation especially in the late half of the century, and there was also the hyper-serialist movement in the 50's-60's where you would be shunned for not writing like Boulez, but that's not representative of the whole century at all. Not even by a longshot. The 20th century is the most creative and personal in my opinion because you can't even assign a label to it! Every composer had their own voice. Even those in subgroups like: Impressionists, Spectralists, Nationalists, etc., they found their individual voices and most often didn't even stick to one specific style all the way through. The tonal music of Schoenberg and Webern, or Alfred Schnittke's ENTIRE OUTPUT is proof of that. For as long as I live, I will forever advocate that more people give 20th century music a chance because there are still so many hidden gems yet to be discovered.

Composers of piano music in classical period
If “between Beethoven” means “before late-Beethoven” which was definitely romantic I’d throw in Hummel. Schubert is right on the line but I think most people stick to his more romantic stuff More on reddit.com

7 Eras of Classical Music
He spent many years in Venice where he composed many of his works and served as the musical director to an orphanage for girls. He influenced any of his peers, including the prolific J.S. Bach, who we discussed earlier in this post. Bach was said to have transcribed many of Vivaldi's pieces and certainly gained many valuable ideas. Vivaldi died a poor man in Venice, despite his immense influence and success. Whereas the baroque era was a period of the development of the sound, expression and colour of classical music composition, the classical era saw the development of form and clarity in structure and order.

During this period, public concerts became prominent, instrumental music was further developed, secular music became more prevalent than church music, and opera took a new role as a more important form of vocal entertainment and musical drama. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Joseph Haydn each found a place in the music world and produced music as expression, art, and entertainment. The height of the Classical Era brought the music of Beethoven and, with his music, ushered in the Romantic Era.

The Classical Period of Music
September 4, 2025 - This is why Classical music is predominantly homophonic, featuring singable melodies supported by harmonically subordinate accompaniment. Composers also made greater use of varied phrase lengths and clearly defined cadences, allowing for more dynamic contrasts and expressive shifts within a single piece. Haydn's Symphony No. 14 in A major, a representative work of early Classical Era composition. The Classical Period also marked the formalization of many enduring musical forms, most notably the symphony and concerto, which continue to shape what we now refer to as classical music.

The Classical Era | Music 101
This preference for simplicity and homophonic texture over the complex counterpoint of Bach and Handel paved the way for a new musical era that we label as classical. The dates of the Classical period in Western music are generally accepted as being between about 1750 and 1820.

August 15, 2025 - The Classical era grew in part out a reaction for the artistic and philosophical values of the Baroque Era. The very term Baroque was applied backward from this time to criticize the overly complicated and ornate styles of art, architecture, and music. The term Classical refers to a return to the clear, natural styles of classical Roman and Greek art and architecture.

The second half of the 16th century witnessed the beginnings of the tradition which many music lovers readily associate with the normal feel of ‘classical’ music. Gradually, composers moved away from the modal system of harmony which had predominated for over 300 years (and still sounds somewhat archaic to some modern ears), towards the organisation of their work into major and minor scales, thereby imparting the strong sensation of each piece having a definite tonal centre or ‘key’. This was also something of a golden period for choral composition as a seemingly endless flow of a capella (unaccompanied) masses, motets, anthems, psalms and madrigals flowed from the pens of the masters of the age.
