r/ClaudeAI on Reddit: I have never used an API. What’s the easiest way to use Claude’s?
September 10, 2024 -

Ive searched this subreddit for answers and I’ve also asked Google, Copilot, and free Claude. I’m sure the answers are out there, so please forgive me that I can’t find them.

Hence I ask for your help. What’s the easiest way for a programming noob to use the Claude API? All I want initially is to ask questions via the API, similar to the subscription version. I want to use the API vs subscription because maybe it’ll be cheaper and I also just want experience with it.

I signed up for an account and have purchased API tokens. I have an API key. But I’m struggling finding concise directions on how to use it.

I’m familiar with the $20/month subscription and want to become familiar with the API as well.

r/ClaudeAI on Reddit: Do I need to pay for both Claude and Anthropic to use the API key?
October 30, 2024 -

I just paid for the Pro version of Claude. Downloaded Cursor and when I went to add the 'API key', it seems like I also need to pay for Anthropic?

I am a little confused. First time doing the Cursor IDE setup. I am a Rider dev.

I want to be able to use Cursor without any limitations. Not bragging but money is not a concern. I make enough as a Software Consultant to afford those memberships.

Also, I heard about bolt.new or something along those lines? I checked it out but it seems towards opinionated out-of-the-box frontend applications.

Any advice?

Thanks!!!

r/ClaudeAI on Reddit: Why do claude AI and claude API key subscriptions differ? Is it possible to use the Claude API with the Claude AI subscription?
August 15, 2024 - You can use the Claude API with a Claude AI subscription, but you'll have to pay separately for the API. The key advantage of the API is that there is no rate limit, but it's pay-as-you-go. While the Claude AI subscription limits the number of messages you can send, the API charges based on tokens (approximately 4 characters per token) sent and generated.

I wanted to share my iOS app that lets you chat with Claude 3! You use your own API key, and the app provides the chat interface.

This lets you try out Claude 3 without having to pay for Claude Pro!

Since the app is powered by your own API Key - that means there's no backend, and the app also supports on-device conversation history. This makes all your chats fully private and secure.

The app also offers API Key access to all the major LLMs like GPT-4 Turbo, Gemini Pro, Mistral Large etc.

March 20, 2024 -

Firstly I apologize if my question seems... silly. However... Who knows, maybe someone will have a solution or a good suggestion.
Recently, I started interacting with Claude and I'm simply loving it! Claude's creative writing is awesome! I would love to have access to the API. However, every time I try to add funds, it continues to ask me for data about my "organization" — which I have none. That's when I searched on the Anthropic website and discovered that the "API is not intended for individual use". Is that it? Noooo! I don't want to accept this cruel sentence.

Do you all use the API under a organization/company? And we, poor individuals, are doomed to the OpenAI API only? 😭

r/ClaudeAI on Reddit: Easiest way to use Claude API to avoid daily limits
April 13, 2024 -

I switched from GPT-4 to now mostly using Claude 3, but the daily message limits are annoying. Also, I really like the ChatGPT interface better. Claude is missing a features like a button to STOP when it’s streaming a long response that is bad.

I use this project to get my own front-end for Claude 3. It uses the API so I have no daily limit to messages, and I get to use a chat interface that has all the features ChatGPT has. Even if you’re not very technical, it’s easy to set up. https://github.com/allyourbot/hostedgpt

It supports both GPT-4 and Claude 3 so it lets you do really cool things like you’re having a conversation with one of them and you don’t like it’s response, you click the “re-generate” button and you can switch assistants mid-conversation. This animated gif demonstrates. The other day I asked it a technical question and switched assistants and finally got the right answer! https://p425.p0.n0.cdn.zight.com/items/ApuPWXb6/c413f8dc-519f-4f5f-b250-45a7688b99d1.gif

It’s also really nice to have access to both GPT-4 and Claude 3 without committing to $20 per month to either. I just get charged for what I use. For example, OpenAI released a new version of the GPT-4 model last week I’ve been going back to it to see how much they improved it. (I don’t have a well-formed opinion yet).

Hey, I know it might be a strange question, but is there a way to use Claude 3 completely free? I mean some site that provides free (unlimited) access, or some sort of free API key? I’ve tried LmsysChat, but it doesn’t work for me anymore.

Title. Basically i haven't tried to use Claude after the whole Poe thing awhile back and was wondering what the best ways to get a Claude api key or some other way to use it for SillyTavern after Poe stopped being officially supported? I have some characters that only really work well with Claude and not OAI or NovelAI that well, so any help would be appreciated!

r/ClaudeAI on Reddit: Use Claude 3 Opus from the API to prevent paying a flat $20/month for it

I highly recommend using Claude 3 Opus from the API, especially if you just want to try it out. It’s not free but the API doesn’t require an upfront flat fee and doesn’t have rate limits etc!

There’s some options for desktop like TypingMind.

For iOS I wanted to suggest my app called Pal Chat that lets you use your own API Key to chat with Claude, and it’s completely free to download: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pal-ai-chat-client/id6447545085

(The app also has no backend and takes absolutely no usage data. You can verify this by going to the app privacy report in iOS settings!)

r/ClaudeAI on Reddit: Just Use the API
April 12, 2024 -

There are so many people here complaining about the chat. Just use the API and add a persona character to it and don't use Opus use Sonnet, it works better for getting around silly restrictions and honestly Sonnet probably writes even better (if that's your goal). With adding a persona to the system message in API you can pretty much do whatever you want.

I just wanted to post this because 1. sonnet is fine. 2. people so negative here like the world granted you this amazing technology that is 100% changing the world for the better (until skynet) and ya'll freaking out about $20. You spend that on a fucking latte every other day. I spend hundreds on API costs through gpt-4 until recently, and I have no no regrets it's completely changed my life, and the world, for the better.

Stop using it like a tool, and start using it like a collaborator.

Also, if you do use claude.ai chat, just start a new chat window. Those long ass conversations each message counts against your token limit. You can talk to this thing all day practically just start a new chat.

r/ChatGPTCoding on Reddit: Which APIs do you use for FREE - Best free options for CODING
June 6, 2025 -

Hi Guys,

let's grow this thread.

Here we should accumulate all good and recommend options and the thread should serve as a reliable source for getting surprising good FREE API Options shown.

I'll start!:

I recommend using the Openrouter API Key with the unlimited and not rate limited Deepseek/Deepseek R1 0528 - free model.

It's intelligent, strong reasoning and it's good at coding but sometimes it sucks a bit.
I Roocode there is a High Reasoning mode maybe it makes things better.

In Windsurf you can use SWE-1 for free which is a good and reliable option for tool use and coding but it misses something apart from the big guns.

In TRAE you can get nearly unlimited access to Claude 4 Sonnet and other Highend Models for just 3$ a month! Thats my option right now.

And... there is a tool which can import your OpenAI-Session Cookie and can work as a local reverse proxy to make the requests from your Plus Subscription work as API request in your Coding IDE ..thats sick right?

r/ClaudeAI on Reddit: Claude Code with API key?
April 11, 2025 -

I'm a bit confused about how claude code work for payment. I've been logging in with my personal account and paying for credits but now I have an API key from my employer which I'd like to use. I also have a Claude Desktop subscription from my employer, but when I log in with that for Claude Code I'm still prompted to pay for my own credits and I don't see how to enter my API key.

I must be misunderstanding something - does anyone have any tips?

r/ClaudeAI on Reddit: How to get Anthropic API Key when "subscribing" to Pro via iOS?
May 20, 2025 -

All.

Pretty much in the subject. I'm subscribed to Pro through iOS.

Firstly - I can't actually see that I'm subscribed to Pro when I log in to Anthropic Console. (It seems to think I have a Free account, despite same email as Apple Subscription).
Secondly - I can't therefore get an API key (which I need for some Langchain work).

I'm losing my sanity here...

Help! Please.

UPDATED: Thanks all for the sage comments re subscriptions through iOS. BUT - this doesn’t explain why the ‘Pro’ subscription isn’t then being recognised by Claude?? (It thinks I’m on Free even though I pay monthly (through Apple - though, no longer).
