r/sysadmin on Reddit: How to hide "Dell Command | Update" popup?
February 3, 2025 -
Hi everyone
We deploy "Dell Command | Update" on all our endpoints. Current version is 5.4.0. Recently our users started seeing this popup even though scheduled/automatic updates are disabled.
[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Dell\UpdateService\Clients\CommandUpdate\Preferences\Settings\Schedule]"ScheduleMode"="ManualUpdates"
Does anybody know how we can hide this popup? Thank you!

Hi, try run Dell Command | Update as administrator (click right on Dell Command | Update - Next - Run as administrator). Only in that way it let me change Setting from Automatic to manual update in application. Update version 5.2.0. Regards Radek

Hi Another Poor Slob: See the section titled 'Update Settings' in the Dell Command | Update Version 4.x User's Guide. Is there a check box at Settings | Update Settings | Automatically Check for Updates | Check For Updates that you can disable to stop automatic background updating? I use Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 on my Inspiron 5584, which cannot run automatic checks for updates. However, the update setting described for Dell Command | Update v4.7.1 in that user guide sounds similar to the setting I have in SupportAssist v3.13.0.126 at Options (gear icon) | Settings | Automate Scans and Optimizations (see image below). -------------64-bit Win 10 Pro v22H2 build 19045.2486 * Firefox v109.0.0 * Microsoft Defender v4.18.2211.5-1.1.19900.2 * Malwarebytes Premium v4.5.20.230-1.0.1868 * Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.7279 * SupportAssist v3.13.0.126 * Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 * Inspiron 5583/5584 BIOS v1.21.0Dell Inspiron 15 5584, Intel i5-8265U CPU, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB Toshiba KBG40ZNS256G NVMe SSD, Intel UHD Graphics 620

Hey Mike, I would also like to find a solution for this. I'm having a further issue where I cannot change any settings in the Dell Command | Update 3.1.2 UWP app - all are greyed out. I was going to use ProcessExplorer to try and see what registry keys are edited when I change settings. Starting as administrator to try and gain permission to change these settings only throws an error. Do you experience this? I'm figuring if we can find a registry key or XML file fix for this, I don't even have to worry about the settings that can't be edited, but wanted to see if it was something that also applied to your environment. Looking further into this today when I have a few minutes and hope to come back with an update. Although my gut says that if you set the 'Check for updates' mode to Manual, that stop the update notifications from coming through on user computers, but this doesn't appear to be the presented behavior for your user machines. Matt

January 14, 2020 - You could set the update behavior to "manual only", and when you want to deploy driver updates, just send a package which runs command line silently in the background, again using a service account that has admin access to the device. ... Yes. There is an option to import and export settings in the 3.1 DCU. I setup a model machine with all of my settings and exported the settings, then used PDQ with the CLI portion of DCU to push that configuration out to my end users. No more notifications.

1) Start the Dell Command Update 3.1 on a computer. 2) Go through all the settings and set it how you want. We have manual check only -- no notifications. 3) Export the settings to an XML file within Dell Command Update 3.1 4) When you install the application on another computer, you need to import that XML file. 5) Import via dcu-cli.exe: > dcu.cli.exe /configure -importSettings=%SystemDrive%\path\to\your\file.xml Within a powershell script I copied the XML file from a shared drive into a temporary location on the computer and then use that as the path for import settings. I was not able to use a network locaiton with the -importSettings flag. I have our update script pull in the settings every time I run the update script just in case something changed in the XML file.

I encountered the same problem. Run Dell Command as an administrator. This should prompt for admin credentials and that will prompt you to decide if you want to check for updates automatically or manually. I ran into this same problem with a domain joined machine updating to 4.6.0 from 4.4.

I already turned off notifications from apps and other senders under "Notifications & Actions" in settings and the Dell Command notifications still haven't gone away.

Remove Dell Command - Update? I don't think there is any other way if you have already killed notifications. I can't say it has been great about notifying me about new updates anyway. It seem to not detect updates I already installed correctly and take forever after a new release to notify me.

are you sure it's command update and not just 'dell update'? you can right click on the icon in the system area on the taskbar and disable autochecking, if so. if it is command update, you can filter what it's notifying for within the application's settings or if it's one particular update you are avoiding (like a certain bios version) you can hide that particular one and it'll ignore until the next version.

Setting Group Policy to "Update" or "Replace" this key should keep the setting from being changed to automatic or some other setting that will notify your users. Below is a pretty good tutorial for doing this in Group Policy if you are new to it. Note the below URL is a third party URL so visit with caution. Update. In fact, that did not solve the problem. But I think I did find the solution. I went Start > All Apps > Windows Administrative Tools > Component Services > Local Services. Right-click Dell Update Services > Stop. When I did that, the update notification literally disappeared off my screen! I think it will be a final solution, but I'll post again, if I still need help. Thanks again :-)

Oh, thank you so very much! I will try to disable, rather than uninstall. However, I don't see a search box in the start menu. If it's the search box called 'Cortana', I disabled it, because it seemed like a gimmick. Plus, the taskbar is not the best place for it, for me. If that's the one, can you tell me how to re-enable it. And also maybe tell me how I can put is somewhere else besides the taskbar, and I will be able to keep it open. If that's not it, how do I get the search box to be visible?
