October 11, 2017 - Sort out the smaller pieces to set inside the pit. I decided to clean my lava rock because I will be gifting two of these for Christmas and no one wants to receive dirty rocks for the holidays. When all is done, place the fuel in the middle and surround it with the small pieces of lava rock and you are ready for your very own indoor fire.

r/woodworking on Reddit: I made a tabletop for my fire pit
November 7, 2023 -
This is my first woodworking project. It’s apitong offcuts that I planed glued up and finished with teak oil. The 1x6s on the bottom align it with the opening of the fire pit. It’s going to live outside(obviously). What are your guys thoughts? I know apitong is hardy (this was trailer decking) but is a glue up like this going to survive in the elements or just warp like crazy? I was thinking about adding some some inlaid metal bracing to the bottom to bridge the seams with the outermost boards but it might be unnecessary. Any input is appreciated!

Looks amazing for a first project! You’ll have to wait and see what happens to know for sure Glued up tops are generally fastened with slotted hardware though, if screwed solid like this it has the potential to rip itself apart. It will expand mostly along the width of the grain, so if you’d put the screws in slots parallel to the grain of the bottom pieces the heads would slide in the slot as the wood acclimated to different conditions Grain orientation also makes a difference, the boards will cup in the direction that straightens the end grain lines. If you alternate the way the boards cup it’ll theoretically compensate and help the piece stay flat

If this will be in the rain, ideally you would have spaces between the boards so they have room to swell perpendicular to the grain. The perpendicular bottom piece will look them together and they will try to swell and warp instead. Note that outdoor furniture and decks tend to have gaps between them. Like the other poster said you could try to make the screw holes on the bottom slotted.
