My method is to jump back and forth between Azgaar and Donjon and screenshot all the shapes I like - I find Donjon better for large, Earth-like continental masses and Azgaar better for large islands and archipelagos. Then I slap them together in whatever photo editor I have handy, and that's my first draft. I typically ignore any topology that's generated; I'd rather work out some tectonics myself and put in my mountains that way, but that's just me. Knowing a thing or two about tectonics will also let you spot any parts of the map that look unlikely to occur naturally, so you can revise it for future drafts. I make heavy use of tools like MapToGlobe - make sure your map's image file is exactly twice as wide as it is tall (known as the square/rectangular projection - Donjon can generate this for you) and you can upload it (Planet > Surface) and see what it looks likes on a sphere. You can do the same thing in GPlates , which is clunky to use at first, but is much easier to draw borders on, allowing you to trace your map and edit the shapes of your landmasses to avoid warping at the poles. A basic guide on using GPlates is here . If you're like me and you're feeling really neurotic about it I've done some ridiculous stuff like printing off the shapes I want, sticking them to my computer screen, cranking the brightness and tracing the outline in GPlates, but I realize that's overkill for most people haha. Azgaar Fantasy Map Generator: the best world building tool i've come across so far
Yes, Azgaar's map generator is a great tool. The only thing I kinda miss with it is the ability to make routes over the antimeridian, which doesn't work. Other features are really great. You can make a culture tree, which allows cultures to descend from other cultures and a load of other things. More on reddit.com

[OC] Pathfinder's World Map Explained- Updated for 2nd Edition!
Based on this old image , updated to take into account new lore, the passing of ten years, and also to be a little less racist! The Older Version is something I've handed out to any players new to Pathfinder when they start the system. However, certain aspects of the old version were... more than a little awful (I'm looking at you, "Bunga Bunga Land", good Christ), and some were just straight up wrong (Welcome to "Nobodygivesafuckia" apparently, despite being the home of the system's most notorious villain, and a super interesting setting to boot!). Hopefully, this updated version retains the charm(?) of the original, while being more accurate and less... yeahhh... anyway. Enjoy! More on reddit.com

A hex map of my world, Belerath. Each hex represents an area 7 miles wide.
Why 7 instead of 6 Mile? With a fully fleshed out map like this you have a wonderful potential for Hex-crawls on the overworld trying to get to the next major city. In Praise of the Six Mile Hex More on reddit.com

How is this different from other fantasy map generators?
Most map creators limit you to premade assets or rigid templates. getimg.ai’s AI map maker creates maps from scratch, based on your input. That means no two maps are the same. Whether you want a dark, mysterious kingdom, a bright and colorful elven realm, or a war-torn land scarred by magic, our Image Generator crafts unique designs tailored to your description. Plus, it's incredibly fast and easy to use, even if you've never designed a map before. You don't need any special software, experience or artistic skills. It's a truly universal tool, perfect for novelists building fictional worlds, g

How does an AI map generator work?
It's surprisingly easy! You start by creating a prompt, which is just a description of the map you want. Think of it like giving instructions to a super-fast, super-talented artist. For example, you might write: "a fantasy map with a large central mountain range, a river flowing to the east, and a forest in the north, drawn in the style of an old, hand-drawn treasure map." You can specify the style (fantasy DnD, realistic, sci-fi, etc.), the content (mountains, oceans, cities), and the scale (a whole world, a single country, a small village). Once you've written your prompt, the Text to Image

What kinds of world maps can I make?
You can generate any type of map imaginable, from entire fantasy worlds to detailed city layouts. The AI excels at creating regional maps, continent maps, kingdom maps, and battle maps for tabletop RPGs, such as Dungeons & Dragons. Each map can be customized with different art styles, from classic hand-drawn fantasy looks to modern topographical styles. Tweak your prompt to add landmarks, settlements, and points of interest to make your world maps rich with detail and ready for adventure.

In your experience, what world map generator (free or otherwise) has given the most naturalistic results? I'm not opposed to paying for map software if it gives good results.

Nortantis is a free, open source fantasy map generator I made. It uses a tectonic plate simulator to generate landmasses. If you want a world-sized map, use a large “World size” when creating the map, along with a low “Edge land probability” and a high “Center land probability”. A couple weeks ago I released a new version with a re-worked UI and installers for Windows and Ubuntu Linux.
