I'm looking at some angle grinders to remove some material off of 1/8" aluminum angle irons, and I was surprised to see the Drill Master angle grinder for $10, and the Chicago Electric for $17. It's not a particularly challenging task, and I don't see myself needing to use it very often so the price is good. However, I've had mixed luck with HF power tools, with the drill being super cheaply constructed but at least works as a drill, while their rotary tool could be stopped with my fingers. I'm curious what everyone's experiences with the angle grinders have been. Do you think these angle grinders are up to the task, and is the Chicago Electric worth the upgrade to the Drill Master? Thanks in advance!

I have the Chicago electric and its well worth the $17. I can't speak to it's longevity as I haven't had it for long, but it seems strong enough, and from the teardowns I've seen of the princesses auto equivalent, it ain't too bad inside. It's plenty powerful enough to where I haven't stalled it, and it'd probably hurt me if I did. The guard is kind of a pain tho From reading about it and feeling it in the store I'd imagine the drill master one is a pile of turd

Could always but the largest and possibly tap the thread if it turned out to not be the largest...
That said I wouldn't invest too much time or money in a drill master grinders. Those actually earn the crap reputation not having ball bearings but rather metal bushings. They won't last nearly as long as any of the other HF grinders having bearings.

October 7, 2012 - 800 watts is plenty for a 4 1/2" angle grinder. IMHO if your leaning on it hard enough to bog that down then chances are you need to be using a bigger wheel + bigger grinder. Or you need to be getting some better consumables! As to the fein, last i saw of there prices were sky high.

June 18, 2008 - I also think you should buy a grinder based on switch design. They're not complicated animals, and the diffs between brands are negligible besides switches. The BORG's are constantly running clearance sales on Dewalt and Makita AG's . I'd get one of those; you'll probably end up with a free 12v driver or corded drill or palm sander to boot!
