I have this super long windy driveway. I was thinking of doing the “showy” mix of flowers from prairie moon all long it. Or possible hop hornbeams. What would look nicer? I haven’t considered shrubs either. I would love some ideas!
I am planning on planting some perennials in the small strip of dirt/mulch next to our driveway (between the lawn and the driveway). I was thinking about planting one perennial between each pair of rocks. Ideally something that doesn’t grow too tall and adds some color. Would you have any recommendations on what would work? Thanks!
We had a gravel driveway put in on our 10 acres in Western MD. It's the first tangible piece of development we've gotten done. The contractors did a great job but now I'm thinking about what to do in the border areas with the straw and mesh. It's zone 7 and fairly shady (as you can see). I want something that isn't going to try and take over, but will grow enough to help hold the soil and look decent. Any suggestions?
Visit the Maryland Cooperative Extension Service website and search native plants. Natives evolved in your growing conditions and will be disease resistant and pollinator friendly.
I would put rows of native fruit and nut bushes, like wild plums, elderberry, hazlenut, aronia, etc.
The plums, aronia, and elderberry will all bloom at different times over the spring and summer. The wildlife will appreciate the extra food even if you don't use them.
Other understory shrubs like dogwood and redbud are nice too.
