I've just had the same problem on the second launch of Eclipse from a fresh installation. The solution was to re-sign the app with an ad-hoc signature:

sudo codesign --force --deep --sign - /Applications/Eclipse.app

Programming course at my uni is starting next week andI was thinking about buying a M2 MacBook Air with an Apple processor this weekend until I checked out the course syllabus. It says that students are required to have a computer that runs Java and Eclipse. Are Apple processors compatible with those softwares?

Yes. It may run in emulated mode. I don’t know if there’s a native version yet… but it will work regardless. Edit: Yep, there is Java runtime environment for Apple Silicon and well as Eclipse runs under Apple Silicon. You may see some significant performance benefits running natively on Apple Silicon.

Apple announced new Macs with in their own M1 SOC today. They’re ARM based processors. Should installing and using Eclipse be a concern? Or for that matter any software that is installed from web and not from Mac’s App Store?

I've been using it on my m1 Mac mini. It runs fairly decently. I have noticed a few hiccups like the auto complete box taking a while to load on some occasions but otherwise it works very well. That could be to do with the fact I use a 3TB HDD for my projects since I only have the base model and 256GB of storage. Have had one crash but seemed to be OS wide where no applications were showing windows and could not be quit. I've just made sure to save my projects regularly.

There are two ways to run eclipse on apple M1.

  1. Running eclipse for intel architecture using rosetta translator(requires jdk as well as eclipse to be of x86_64 architecture)
  2. Running eclipse built for apple M1 with a jvm for aarch64

In the first case you can use 4.19 build. In general eclipse should work, but there can be some problems

In the second case there is a build available from 4.20 onwards at eclipse-SDK-4.20-macosx-cocoa-aarch64.dmg. This will require a jvm for apple M1.

With JEP 391: macOS/AArch64 Port targeted for Java 17, you should be able download jvm for apple m1
