Budget will dictate what you can do, but the goal is to understand why the customer needs your product. Ethnographic study, Focus groups, or 1 on 1 interviews would all work. The cheapest route is surveys, but like a junior coder who can make a program run with bad code, there is a skillset to building good surveys. You can use simple programs like Google forms or top-tier software Qualtrics or Medallia. Expect low engagement, which may require additional follow up via direct email or phone call. Pro Tip: Ask if the respondent would be open for additional research and collect contact details. As far as who to focus on, that depends on the software. If the purpose of your software is to sell it, then I would focus on power users. If its to scale internal processes than focus on consultants. You can do both, but only prioritize one.

The more unbiased you are during the interviews and evaluation of the data, the better. More on reddit.com

This can be difficult. If the product is something never seen before, then market research will not help you in any way whatsoever. As an example of this, Apple famously do not have a market research department. Why? Because as Steve Jobs rightfully said, how can anyone tell you what they want in, or how they would use something they haven’t seen yet, and can’t really comprehend, like the iPad, before there was ever an iPad. If it’s a product they have used, or have used something similar to, then ask them about their experiences, and what they would change, and what they like the most, etc. More on reddit.com
