REVIEW: Logical fallacies in the presidential debate - The Daily Lobo
September 16, 2024 - On Tuesday, Sept. 10, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump met in person for the first presidential debate between the two candidates. During the debate, both Harris and Trump used more than a few logical fallacies — described in a philosophical context as “reasoning that comes to a conclusion without the evidence to support it,” according to Merriam-Webster.

April 19, 2022 - Remember, there has to be a logical reason that the next step must follow the first. In the above case, there is nothing that forces legislators to enfranchize dogs just because they enfranchize women; making it a fallacious argument.

What are some common logical fallacies you’ve seen people use, and how do you avoid them?
Strawmanning and whataboutisms seem to be a common theme across the board. Whataboutisms can be useful if you are trying to draw a parallels to hypocrisy between another person's claims but it is often used to divert attention onto a different topic entirely. More on reddit.com

How do logicians even use fallacies in debates and disputes? How do they even learn all of them?
They don’t. Fallacies are not part of formal logic. In my opinion, learning all of those as a debate tactic is kind of a waste of time. (I also think that debates are a waste of time, but that’s just me.) It is more effective to learn logic (propositional, predicate, modal, etc.) and understand the implication operator very deeply. When you have a solid foundation in these “approximations” to the logic of natural language, it becomes very easy for you to identify potential errors in reasoning. Oh, also you should learn some statistics and probability. Inductive reasoning is used all the time and it’s good to understand how it differs from deductive reasoning. More on reddit.com

The annotated data show different types of communicative relationships that political leaders developed with their audiences. The annotation of the types of argument and the fallacies characterizing an argumentative message is a growing need in several areas of research. First, in fields of logic and critical thinking, the analysis and the evaluation of arguments is taught at a theoretical level using textbook examples; however, the skills acquired by students or researchers on accurately selected or even invented cases are not sufficient for analyzing real messages.

October 15, 2016 - In this example, Donald Trump makes the point that by removing border laws on insurance companies, competition will result in the finest health care plan there is which is an oversimplification of a much more complex problem (different incomes, different pathologies, price of healthcare…). It is important to note that during the whole exchange on the topic, this was the only argument made. Therefore, rendering a possibly valid argument an oversimplification. The example also includes overstatements which are not a logical fallacy but a literary device often used in politics.
