dichotomy: split things into two groups, where there is NO overlap and nothing left out. I will create a dichotomy of pizzas. Think of every pizza in the universe. Every pizza either has pepperoni on it, or it doesn't. Lets label the groups: A has every pizza with pepperoni on it. B has every pizza without pepperoni on it. This is a dichotomy for two reasons: there is no overlap. You can't find a pizza that is both in A and B. So there is zero overlap. there is no pizza that is missing from the two groups. EVERY pizza is in either A or B. So this is a dichotomy. A false dichotomy is any time you try to make a dichotomy, but fail, like this: every pizza has either pepperoni on it, or mushrooms. This fails because: some pizzas don't have either topping. some pizzas have both toppings. So this is a FALSE dichotomy, because it failed to be a dichotomy. More on reddit.com

You say, "I don't like McDonalds." I say, "Oh, so that means you like Burger King!" That's a false dichotomy. It's setting up a scenario where there are only two options (either McDonalds or Burger King), when in reality there are far, far, far more options than two.
