yeah i just asked fedex directly and they said “Appreciate your patience. I understand that you would like to know if you can use your own box. I have checked and it shows that FedEx One Rate requires you to use FedEx Express packaging. This means you can’t use your own box for FedEx One Rate shipments. However, you can use your own packaging for other FedEx services, as long as the boxes are sturdy, undamaged, and all flaps are intact.” Answer from summernicolee_ on reddit.com

"FedEx Box" discounts and dumb questions
I just went to FedEx.com and rated from Los Angeles to New York. The only rate that came close to $16 was a FedEx medium box using one rate pricing. So I guess it depends on what you mean by "across the entire US". XL box was $31.36 using standard rate. The dimensions you listed would round to 12x11x11. All non-fedex packaging gets dim weight. FedEx packaging may or may not. That's why you can sometimes see a large variances for a similar sized box. What would happen if you select FedEx box but use your own packaging? You might get away with it or you might not. Which reminds me, I had a customer complain that when she dropped off at the location where I worked she got billed one charge. When she dropped at another location, she's got charged less and wanted to know why we were over charging her. We showed her how we rated her shipment and figured out the other location wasn't doing the dim weight and was under charging her. We told her we would correct the other location. 😁 Marking residential helps you get a more accurate rate upfront among other things. Also Express saver rates didn't disappear when I rated the FedEx boxes. More on reddit.com

Does FedEx care about a .25 or .50 inch discrepancy in box size?
but I am curious if that is only in case with a larger discrepancy, and if it is even worth our time to add the .25 or .50 inch to the measurements The packages get measured by laser and the billed dimensions adjust if necessary. You can see any differences between your claimed dims by looking at your shipping history comparing it to your invoice. The invoice will tell you the dimensions billed and if there were differences egregious enough to change the billing. Does your shipping tool allow decimals? Some of the FedEx Ship Manager fields don't take decimals. You're supposed to round up to the nearest inch (or switch to centimeter units I guess). Would love to know if other shipping tools take decimals. I use box specified dimensions if available. Occasionally the lasers add an extra inch somewhere, usually not big enough to change anything. Good luck if you need to dispute something, refunds are basically off the table this year. More on reddit.com

July 8, 2025 - To test and understand these pricing differences, you’ll want to have the existing rate table and a dimensional weight (DIM) scale available. UPS, FedEx, and USPS use your package’s actual weight and its DIM weight to determine the weight calculation they apply to your cost. DIM weight is a calculation based on overall box size to build pricing around the volume of your package. It’s designed to help the carrier generate revenue based on large but light products.

r/FedEx on Reddit: "FedEx Box" discounts and dumb questions
September 7, 2020 -

I feel like these Ship Manager options are cursed so I'm asking here and not elsewhere.

I noticed picking "FedEx Box" is sometimes cheaper than keying in the same box dimensions by hand. Why exactly does this happen? I heard somewhere it's an incentive to help improve sorting. Do those boxes get preferential DIM factors or is it caused by rounding?

For my example I'll ship a 1-2LB FedEx® Extra Large Box (X1: Cube-shaped) across the entire US. You probably wouldn't use such a big box for 2LB but it makes it obvious. The dimensions are 11-7/8'' x 10-13/16'' x 11-1/16'' (30.16 cm x 27.46 cm x 28.10 cm).

2Day "FedEx Box": $16.29

2Day Rounding down to 11x10x11 (NOT allowed): $24.20

2Day Rounding up to 12x11x12 (correct way): $26.50

That's a $10 difference to ship exactly the same thing. It's something I check for now because it's occasionally cheaper to use a free FedEx box that's slightly bigger than to grab a box I own that's the right size.

Does FedEx even check if something is their own packaging? What would happen if you shipped a different box with similar dimensions and billed it as a FedEx Box? Or a Pak?

Also, why do Express Saver rates disappear if I select FedEx Box? I can get a rate for it if I use Your Packaging or FedEx Pak. It's like they don't consider Express Saver an express option.

P.S Is there any tangible benefit to checking "This is a residential address" on Express shipments since they don't get weekend delivery anyways? I notice if you miss it the residential surcharge is tacked onto your invoice with no penalty rates.
