Festool ETS EC 150/5
I just went through the exact same debate and bought the 150/5 a few weeks ago. It's been a significant upgrade from my big box store sander - much more comfortable, no dust, sands more quickly. It definitely is aggressive when you want it to be, and I really appreciate it on large surfaces. One important point: it requires very little suction from a vac/dust extractor. In other words, turn the extractor down or open up an air port in your hose. Too much suction, and you'll feel it pulling onto the wood. I was getting swirls at first until I got my settings right. When it's set correctly, the sander will feel like it's floating on the wood. I was surprised how little suction was required to keep the dust clear. I'm still uncertain about finishes and high grits, but I just haven't tested it much. In the past I used the orbital with 220 between polyurethane coats. I've only tried it once on the Festool and thought it was taking too much off, but I probably need to try a higher grit or lower speed. Consistent with the comments here, everyone I've talked to has been happy with it. Across the Festool line, this one seems to be the jack-of-all-trades. More on reddit.com
Festool ETS 150/3 or 150/5 sander?
most sanders are smaller stroke, I spend most of my time on 80grit for smoothing, I went 150/5. But I have a much less expensive dewalt that I could use for finish sanding (but never ever feel the need) More on reddit.com

Festool ETS 150/3 Sander review - FineWoodworking
May 17, 2009 - I've had a Festool ROS 150 3mm for some years now and only had to replace one pad after a great deal of use. I've also used it with the CT22 for preparing plastered walls after hole repair and prior to hanging wallpaper. It really does get 99.9% of that dust, which is a great thang when the ladywife comes a-looking with a fingertip run over the furniture. Incidentally, a hard pad is much better than the softer one that comes with the sander, if you are normally sanding flat/straight stuff; much less chance of rounded edges and it will not squish into small hollows.

r/woodworking on Reddit: Festool ETS EC 150/5
November 27, 2022 -
I'm in the market for a new sander, and from what I can tell, the Festool ETS sanders are among the best options.
I have seen a bunch of videos, regarding the differences between the 3 and the 5-version of the sander, but I'm still a bit unsure of which sander would be best overall. One of the main points regarding the 5-version, is that it's more aggressive because of the increased stroke range. Would I be able to use the 150/5 version for sanding to high grits (in addition to the more aggressive sanding?)
I work with a mix of sheet goods and hardwood, if that helps.

FWIW regarding your comment about the 5 being more aggressive, there is a YouTube video out where some guy tests how long it takes to sand through a veneer for each. It took the 3 four minutes, the 5 was two minutes. That convinced me that you just needed to be mindful when working with the 5.

June 8, 2021 - I have had much better success with the 150/3 and have not had the issue with seeing scratches in dense wood. Sort of wish they would make a 150 with a 2mm stroke like the taller ETS 125/2... ... Ive decided to go with the 3mm stroke, but now i have to find the dang sander!! I foolishly didnt realize Festool was out of stock across the country.

ETS 150/5 vs ETS EC 150/5 | Festool Owners Group
December 3, 2024 - The ETS EC is my preferred sander, it's smaller, lighter, has better balance and is an all-around improvement on the ETS series. It's also brushless so what's not to like? The down side though is that it does not have an internal impeller to deposit the dust into a bag...it always needs to be used with a CT vac...but that's a minor consideration once you use it. ... I've owned every 150mm sander Festool had/has on the market, and in my opinion the ETS EC's are the crowning achievement by far in the RO range.
