[request] mounting tv over fireplace in a rental, without drilling into the fireplace because I can't mount flush
Tv mount uneven brick wall fireplace
Safest way to mount 75" TV on brick fireplace wall
I’m trying to get my tv to sit above the mantle but the stand is too big so it would fall forward. Judging by the decorative brick in pretty sure I can’t safely drill in anchors and it’s an active wood burning fireplace… Anyone have any ideas on how to live my dreams??
How big of a TV stand with a fireplace do I need?

So I'm moving into a new place next week and we'd really like to mount our TV over the fireplace. The fireplace doesn't work anyway (we may throw some lights in there to fake it and make it look nice but no actual fire) so we want to make the space a little more functional by adding a tv there. I don't want to drill directly into the fireplace since I'm just renting, but on top of that, there are some small shelves that stick out of the fireplace as well that would keep us from being able to flush mount anyway.
I was thinking my best bet would be to build some sort of frame that attached to studs in the walls on either side of the fireplace, stuck out as far as we need (if I recall it's about 6 inches) and then bridged the gap with 2x4's or plywood so we could put a regular VESA tv mount up.
My other option was to build something larger but free standing with some storage in it that would look more like built-in cabinets, but I feel like that could look tacky and unnatural.
Has anyone else done anything like this before? Any tips? What worked well, what didn't?
