March 10, 2022 - Raising a number to power 0.5 implies taking the square root of that number. The square root of nine is a float, thus even though nine`s data type is an int, Python generates a float 3.0. If both operands of an expression are integers, the ** operator returns an integer and if one of the operands is floating-point number it returns a float.

Is floating point math deterministic?
Ok r/programming , it looks like we need to have a discussion on what it means to be "deterministic". Deterministic means that given some input, will a operation produce the same output every time. So, for example, lets say you have a function that says add(a, b); that function always returns 4 when a = 2 and b = 2, then that function is deterministic. If that function always returns 7 when given a = 2 and b = 2, that function is STILL deterministic. If that function always returns 3 when a = 2 and b = 2 and the micro architecture is a ARM version 7 processor, that function is STILL deterministic. The key is that the function ALWAYS returns the same result given a certain input regardless of if the result is correct or not. Deterministic means something behaves exactly the same way given the same input. It has nothing to do with compiler optimization, architecture differences, or data representation limitations. A piece of code that behaves differently across platforms is still deterministic, but inconsistent across platforms. In that light, it should be clear that floating point math IS deterministic. Processors don't randomly spit out numbers when you tell them to add two floating points, the answer is predictable. It may be different across platforms, but it is still consistent. When it is inconsistent, generally the processor has more issues and is due to cause the system to crash. If it was not deterministic, we would have a source for good solid random numbers on all platforms. We could do floating point math on a couple of static numbers, and then pull off the last bits of the results. Viola, real random numbers done quickly. Alas, floating point math is deterministic and that doesn't work (hence, nobody does it). More on reddit.com

Do floating point number concerns still hold when dealing with Currency in Python 3? Seems like most articles/concerns were on 2.7 which handled things differently.
If you're dealing with currency, use the decimal module. Floats in Python 3 are still just C doubles, meaning they're subject to all the usual IEEE 754 issues.

I'm not sure if this is a problem with my IDE or if its a Python issue but when I add a floating point number, take 3.14 for example, to some numbers I get a lot of additional 0s.
y = 3.14 y1 = 3.14 + 1 print(3.14) Output: 4.140000000000001
I noticed this issue occurs when I add 1 to 4 but if I add 5 I get 8.14 instead, without all of the 0s.
Why does this only happen when adding certain numbers?

If it terminates in base 2 it will not have any problems as long as the resolution and precision of the floating point primitive is not exceeded. The rules are as follows: If you have an irrational number it doesn't terminate in base 2, If you have a rational number of the form a/b and b does not contain a prime factorization of only 2s then that rational number doesn't terminate in base 2. So .1 is 1/10 which 10 has a prime factorization of 2 and 5, but 5 is not a 2 so .1 doesn't terminate in base 2. But 1/16 16 has the prime factorization of 2,2,2,2 and so 1/16 terminates in base 2. You can get around this for rational numbers if you store both the numerator and the denominator of each rational number and then do math using fractions as your operands.
