r/GMail on Reddit: I have access to my gmail from my old phone but forgot the password to log into my new one
October 19, 2024 -

I keep getting the “You didn’t provide enough info for Google to be sure this account is really yours. Google asks for this info to keep your account secure. If possible, try again and use a device where you’ve signed in before.” when I say I forgot my password. Even using my old phone, I only can access it through my mails app which doesn’t tell me the current password.

Surely there must be a way to find or reset the password since I still can access the emails from my account. Any advice is much appreciated!

Is there a working recovery e-mail and recovery phone configured on the account? If not, it will probably be impossible to prove ownership of the account. The only account recovery option Google provides starts at https://accounts.google.com/signin/recovery Google does not provide live support for account recovery, you must use the above link.

Without knowing if your phone is Android or iPhone, the following process MAY help on your old phone if it is Android. Open up "Settings" on your old phone. Scroll down to "Accounts and backup" and click it. Click on "Manage accounts". Find your "forgotten password" Google account with the "G" logo and click on it. Click on "Google Account". This should bring up your details for the account and will show a horizontal scrollable line just below your email address. Scroll this line until you find the "Security" tab and click on it. At this point, you should be able to see a shield logo relating to "Security Checkup", which in your case, will probably show as a yellow warning message. Clicking on the shield or "See details" will bring you to a list of "Security Check-Up" and "recommended actions", which should end up having green ticks when you are done. You need to focus on the "Sign-in and recovery" drop-down menu and deal with all the warnings under that menu. You need to set as many "2-Step Verification" options as you can to enough verification for your account. You could, at several points in the process, be challenged to provide a password to authenticate yourself. Be careful if you do get this warning as you could lock yourself out of the account. I can't be sure, but you might be able to change your password from this point by the "forgotten password" recovery process as you are doing it from the account that should "know" that you were authenticated. But be careful. There are no guarantees. I hope this helps.

Forgot Gmail Password & tried "forgot password" but its asking for code from same Gmail
Google probably believes you still have access to the account somewhere (like the phone where you received the verification code)… * Still signed in on some computer or mobile device * Have an e-mail client or app connected to the account * Have forwarding setup to another account * Have another account using POP3 to fetch messages. Check around and see if you have a way of accessing the verification code sent to the account. If you still can’t find a way to access the e-mail sent to the account, then try letting the account sit for a full week with NO sign in or account recovery attempts. Just leave it idle for a week. This may allow you to attempt account recovery with different questions being asked. - The only account recovery option Google provides starts at https://accounts.google.com/signin/recovery - Google does not provide live support for account recovery, you must use the above link. I forgot my password without any backup BUT I still have access
All you can do is open a browser and attempt account recovery. Google does SOMEtimes send a verification code to the actual account, but there's no way to force or request that. - The only account recovery option Google provides starts at https://accounts.google.com/signin/recovery - Google does not provide live support for account recovery, you must use the above link. - For additional information see: http://gmailaccountrecovery.blogspot.com/ More on reddit.com

Forgot password to Gmail account help?
The only account recovery option Google provides starts at https://accounts.google.com/signin/recovery (an account can not be recovered by posting here or contacting Google). Submitting more accurate answers and using a known computer/IP-address will help. This post provides an overview of how account recovery works (you NEED to read this) https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/gmail/SzwFXkqLvr0 and this article provides many more details on the process (you SHOULD read this) http://gmailaccountrecovery.blogspot.com/ But if you can’t correctly answer enough of the questions to prove ownership of the account Google will not give it to you. Can't access Gmail account, forgot password help!
Try letting the account sit for a full week with NO sign in or account recovery attempts. Just leave it idle for a week. This may help any suspicious activity flags to clear allowing you to attempt account recovery with more questions being asked. This of course assume you actually DO have a recovery e-mail (hotmail) or recovery phone configured on the account. If not, then waiting won't help. More on reddit.com
