I did a bunch of research on these last year and if you have no budget it seems like "American Leather" is a very good option. It was out of my price range considering we would only use the bed a few times each year. We opted for a Structube pull out sofa ( https://www.structube.com/en_ca/belgrove-sofa-bed-with-memory-foam-mattress-54-79-74?pid=17810 ). So, your final choice will depend on your use case and budget. Factors to consider are the folding mechanism (ours is the newer kind that pulls out from the back), mattress, and size. Ours just fit through the door by like a couple millimetres, so measure twice! We've been very happy with our purchase. Only con is that it squeaks a little, but I think we can fix that. I sleep on a japanese futon with tatami mats.We fold it most days, and on the days we don’t it looks ugly, but because of the tatami mats, the space in front of the bed is unusable.

Sofa beds can be really easy to fold up because of springs/mechanism built into the frame. My only concern would the quality of the mattress, because they can sometimes be really soft and unsupportive. I did a week vacation where we folded up the couch every day and it was easier and less awkward than dealing with the futon. Ultimately if you need the space it should force you to do the chore!

the other downside of sofa beds is that they are heavy and large. i live in an apartment where a regular sofa and a queen mattress would not fit up the stairs.

how old are you? I slept on a Target futon, the black kind that folds in half, that had a dead spring in it, for months when I was 20. i swear as long as you exercise enough you can sleep like a log on any surface, especially if you’re a young person.

I am actually thinking of getting a bed frame for my futon to improve air circulation below the tatamis, because i’m tired of folding and having a pile of bedding on the floor instead of just a bed. Would love to know if anyone does that or has horror stories of their bed frame not being able to support the weight of the tatamis.

It's going to be really hard to buy an actually high-quality sleeper sofa for less than $1000. But you're much better off going with Ikea than a random couch with 4.1 stars on Amazon.
