I'm a male and think programs to bring women into tech are a good thing. All other things being equal, yes, hire exclusively based on skill. But there are several reasons why this doesn't apply to our current reality. Nobody knows your skill. Your resume, work history, and GitHub hosted projects are all attempts to measure your skill, but the measurement isn't numeric and precise, and the weighting of the values of each measurement is not an objective science. By the time you get to this point in the job market, people are so close as to be very hard to distinguish--so assessing skill is very much a toss-up. You are not clearly better or worse than most of your competitors. Diversity in a workplace has been proven to improve the quality of a work place. So even if you are more skilled than some female, they may actually contribute more to the workplace through soft skills and mere diversity. Your infinitesimally greater individual programming ability doesn't outweigh the productivity of an entire team. People get pushed out when they are isolated. We've seen this in America with majority white and majority black schools. If you're the only minority, you usually leave because you are not accepted by the rest of the group. I learned recently that the magic number is about 25%: When a school is more than 25% white, then white parents are comfortable sending their kids to that school. Presumably the converse holds, that when a school is at least 25% black then black parents are comfortable sending their kids to that school. One could imagine that a similar dynamic is at play with women. Just earlier today I saw someone on r/csMajors say that she wanted to leave her CS program because she was one of two women in the class. People need a "critical mass" of people like themselves. This isn't unique to women, they're not especially delicate or complaining. This is how normal people are. If Google's internship program is creating a critical mass of women so that, in the next generation, women feel comfortable joining the tech workforce--I celebrate that. It's an investment in our future. 4) Sucks if you can't get the internship and make your family proud. But there are opportunities for men also. This opportunity allows some women to provide for themselves, become independent and successful, and makes their families proud. So I'm not mad. 5) I briefly looked around and didn't see any mention of Google STEP India's program being women only. But I just might not have looked hard enough. More on reddit.com
