February 5, 2024 - Google pay in india is lot different. Its focused on upi payment system not card beased. Best would be to setup upi. Any bank account can be attached to it. PhonePe is the one I would recommend. Its good infrastructure wise with no extra fees and no minimum. As you don't have bank account and phone number, get sim on first day and open NRI account same day.

Will be traveling to India from the United States. Looks like Google Pay is more widely accepted than Apple Pay is, so I will be downloading Google Pay. Can I use my Google Pay that is connected to my American bank account in India?

India's Google Pay is different that that of States. India's Google pay is build on UPI (an indigenous payment system ). If you are referring to NFC capability, it will work fine in India with both apple pay and google pay. (Small Merchants don't have nfc pos setup though).
