I have a production app which tracks the geolocation in background on ios and android written in ionic + cordova. Number one reason of geo location not working is hardware. Sometimes the cheap android phones, irrespective of android version, will not have a GPS chip and would rely on wifi or mobile network for location. These will always give you erratic results. Some from xiaomi or samsung will have their own custom ROM and they will most likely kill your app. One way to go around is that you have a local notification shown. That will not kill your app. https://dontkillmyapp.com/ Never rely on webview for location. As soon as the app goes into background, the webview js execution pauses. If you need to have pinpoint accuracy, ditch cordova and move to capacitor. Create your own implementation for android in native code as a plugin. If you cannot do it, hire an experienced professional to write the native part. That person needs to: Detect the OS and check with the list if the background app is killed Write code which keeps the geo location running in background and keep adding the last coordinates in local persistent database Persist the state Restart the app if it is killed, similar to what Whatsapp or Truecaller do, and start from the same screen where it was last Show a high priority local notification or play audio like a song so that the OS thinks it is an audio player Test test test on numerious hardware devices and keep iterating. Even on native code, geo location tracking is very hard. Uber etc. have 100s of android engineers dedicated to this problem. They have bucket loads of money to throw at the problem and they have 1000s of devices to test on. Yes, they have almost all devices on the market.
