January 28, 2018 - They are usually operated by 5V in keyboards and output a signal that's close to that from 2 output pins when pressed (note: some hall effect switches only have 1 output pin. They are not covered here. Some switches, especially for those in keypunches only output a pulse and not a continuous signal.

June 16, 2012 - The mounting plate is placed on top of the PCB and the chip is soldered to the PCB through the plate. The rest of the switch is then placed on top of it and held in place with metal clips. The spring is stuck between the slider and the mounting plate. Maybe this picture will clear it up a bit.
