We have a bench and it has been great for visitors, especially older guests. It keeps people from walking back into the living space to put on shoes. I would consider how the flow of foot traffic would be impacted. Personally, I’d put something there (a bench, an extra box, etc.) for a week and see how it feels to go from the hallway into the dining area. You will also need to account for moving the light switches and thermostat that are currently located in the archway Edited to add: I personally wouldn’t be concerned with it feeling “closed off” especially if you plan to keep the area light like your inspo! I’m trying to decide if I want a storage bench for my entryway or if I want a console table.
I’m not sure if I’d ever use the bench part. Maybe in the winter when lacing up snow boots? But I can’t fathom much more than that.
I don’t like impractical furniture, so while I love how they look, I’m having trouble with the idea of a console table that’s just another thing I have to decorate. The only function I see for it is a key drop, but I can brainstorm alternative ideas to that with a bench.
Here are my pros/cons for each:
BENCH (Pros)
Potentially practical, especially in the winter and for older guests
Requires less decor/trinkets
Appears cozy and inviting
Provides extra storage in our small home
BENCH (Cons)
May not get used much
Difficult to find the right size for our entryway
Can be more $ than a console table

Bench because I can’t stand when people walk onto my expensive, white living room rug to put their shoes back on lol. We actually have a bench and a Hemnes shoe storage dresser from ikea that doubles as a console table
