I would say it definitely depends on the authenticity of what you are going for. If you are talking about something "game-y" and synthetic you can get close without an actual guitar amp VST or a plugin though I do not have names for VST's and plugins you can use to get close to this. On the Japanese side of things, you can especially hear this a lot in older Capcom games and other games along those lines (I would put the Megami Tensei series as an example as well). This example comes from someone where I recognize a lot of the guitars distinctly sound like someone who was using RealGuitar or something along those lines (RealStrat/RealLPC) from MusicLab and there are free amp sims and Impulse Responses so you can get something that sounds like a decent amp provided you learn how to make your synth guitar sound authentic. Edit: I would also link something like this for reference on something that is also much more synthetic but still very much in the rock-metal field of things. But if you were looking for something "authentic" and realistic-sounding I don't think you can really beat having a guitarist on your side to point things out or greatly studying how these synths work to imitate how a real guitarist would play chords or play through their progressions (as well as adding in the human touches). Metal is a very wide genre and can be done in all sorts of ways either with real acoustic instruments or completely synthesized instruments so I don't see anything particularly wrong with doing an approach leaning one way or the other or blending them. You will see a lot of gatekeeping and elitism there but I don't think you need to put two-and-two together to realize that anyone can participate and contribute. More on reddit.com
