The current pricing on Amazon is: M300 $189 (including case and screen protector), R4 $249. I have tried out the M300 and liked the device overall, at the time the R4 wasn't available on Amazon but now that it is I'm wondering if it's worth getting the R4 over the M300. I do plan on using it with a Sony Bluetooth speaker (srsxb43), and with the Fiio FHE and (once they arrive) the FatFreq DEUCE. I'm not too knowledgeable with these kind of things but ivee seen mentioned that R4 has had some issues (overheating), and having to use UAPP with M300 because of some reasons. I guess I'm just wondering if any of that matters or makes one better than the other.

My opinion: Practically, unless you need to drive harder to drive over ear headphones, M300 is better. The same android hardware, smaller size, better runtimes, less noise (floor, interference), less heat, newer android. You do get some extra features with R4. Resampling bypass, 4.4mm, etc... but most of them are... let's say inconsequential for simply listening to music with IEMs or over BT, which you intend to do.

Watch a Youtuber named Super Review. He does great reviews of both of these. You don't have to use UAPP but there are a lot of dap users who like it. I use the Hiby music player as that is what comes on both of these daps and I'm not very picky about that. According to Super Review he thought the sound from the M300 was better. Also, he said the battery life is better on the M300. I would say if you're not using the dap turn off bluetooth and wifi as those will drain your battery quicker. Hope this helps.

The M300 is smaller, lighter, has better battery life and is cheaper. The things that distinguish the R4 are the Class A Amp, the balanced output, and the system-wide EQ. That means it’s bigger, heavier, lasts less on a full charge, and runs hot. Unless you want to play with the balanced output/amp or want it for the looks or style. September 27, 2024 - M300 doesn’t output bit-perfect via USB. Non-Android Tidal/Qobuz is too primitive and there is no download/offline listening. Hiby R4 for not much more money fixes all of the above deal-breakers.
