New homeowner here looking for advice, like so many others before me I'm sure. Need to gut & redo the whole bathroom minus the toilet. Willing to pay for quality work, but don't want to get ripped off obviously. No clue where to begin looking. Thank you in advance for any help you may provide! Located in Monmouth County, NJ.
Edit: Thank you everyone for your helpful replies. Since it's going to be a down to studs renovation, I decided to bring in some contractors first and then get prices from the box stores. I'd attempt it myself but I just don't have the skills or time.
I personally would never use Home Depot, or Lowes for a project like this. They just sub-contract to local people. The issue is that you have no control over who actually comes to do the work.
There is certainly something to be said for having a large company to back the work, but from my (admittedly small number of) data points, I find that in general, the bottom of the barrel tend to work for my local Big Box stores.
Find someone who has had similar work done and get a recommendation from them.
Not sure if Monmouth is included, but if you get an account on Nextdoor.com, your neighbors can be really helpful. Many people in my area will post up asking for similar information. It helps weed out the people that will really botch a job and many of my neighbors will even invite you to their home to see the work that whoever has done. Choosing a contractor for me is about as daunting as trying to find a primary care physician in a new city. Good luck.
