Andy, our IT staff installs HP Assistant on all of our department’s machines and I leave it running in the background. The next time I talk with a Tech Support specialist I will ask if there is a way of making it “portable”.
Tim Emery, so far I haven’t had any problem at all with the auto updating. In fact, thankfully, I don’t have to worry about installing the most recent drivers.

So since forever I’ve always wiped machines I get from HP and loaded up with a blank image (too much bloat ware for my liking + don’t like the fact everything ends up HP branded) and i’ve always hated finding the right drivers.
However earlier this week I found an AMAZING tool HP Support Assistant lets not get into how much of an ID 10 T i’ve been not to notice or use it in the past…
It installs the drives and lets me pick some of the “minor” bloatware like fingerprint sensor but all the major stuff like hp protect tools don’t get installed
Anyway two questions for you lovely SpiceHeads:
- Do you install it and leave it on the machine? If so do you disable it or just leave it to do its thing in the background?
- If you don’t leave it on there do you know a way of making it “portable” so i don’t have to reinstall it everytime I want to check / update drives?
Thanks in advance
Andy

I am wondering if the HP support assistant troubleshooter is reliable?
Hello helpful people. So my rather ancient (non HP) PC (running Windows 10) had the HP Support Assistant package installed when we had an HP printer for a while. We've long since moved on to other brands of printer but I just can't get rid of the thing. I've uninstalled all of the components I can but there's one left in the software centre. Whenever I try to uninstall that though it says it can't because HP Support Assistant requires it. The problem is that HP Support Assistant appears in no software manager lists that I can find. It appears that it was uninstalled at some point but the uninstall didn't finish successfully and some fragment of it remains preventing me from getting rid of the rest of the drivers and periodically flashing up to tell me I need to update the drivers/firmware on a printer that's likely in landfill by now. Any suggestions on how to get rid of the thing if you can't find it on an uninstall list?
Editing to add some more context following further investigation thanks to a suggestion from u/girth-vader, edited text from my reply to them is below:
-
HP Support assistant does appear on the Start Menu program list
-
When I right click that, it takes me to the old style control panel, "add/remove programs" section, where HP Support assistant does not appear in the list
-
There was an icon on the task bar indicating that I had important messages in the HP Support Assistant, I accessed that and got rid of all the messages and that icon has now disappeared.
-
I checked the start-up section of the task manager as suggested but found no entry for HP Support Assistant so I couldn't disable it (how it's starting up on boot if it's not in there I don't know)
-
I did find a process related to HP Support Assistant in the task manager that I killed but it's not open in the Task Manager Apps
-
Having done all of this I once again tried to uninstall the only item I can find in Add/Remove Programs, which is HP Support Framework (v 12.9.24.3). The uninstall dialogue pops up to ask if I want to remove file 99ee2f0b.msi but, when I say yes, it then fails saying that HP Support Assistant needs it
I'm beginning to wonder if I should try and get a fresh install from the HP site and see if I can then uninstall that and see if it gets the whole thing.
