Just wondering, because I've run Cyperpunk on UltraRT and thermals sit anywhere between high 70s and mid 80s, and I can clearly feel the heat above my case if I touch it.
However, sometimes (randomly) when running not nearly as intensive games it will sit around high 80s and 90s on HWMonitor, and it is clearly not hot at whatsoever. I ran Diablo 2 resurrected and my GPU (RTX 3080) was at a comfortable 45-50, but the CPU was at high 80s, even 90 (again, not warm at all) .
I know most recommend using HWinfo, so I'm wondering if this is a common thing for HWMonitor. Thanks!
Hello PCMR. I usually lurk around here more than post but right now I'm a bit baffled and I need some help.
I'm not sure if my CPU is running too hot or not and I can't really find any definitive answer by googling around.
Intel specs tell me that the safe CPU temp is 72 C and but I'm not sure what temperature exactly is that.

I've had it on to monitor my temps for a good time now and I'm wondering, does the 72 C limit mean the cores or the CPU socket which have never even reached 70 C. (Since CPU itself always show constant 60 C I'm assuming that there's no actual sensor in there).
My CPU core temps usually hover around 70-76 C under load but they can occasionally jump up all the way to 90 celsius and it's a bit worrysome.
I do use the stock cooler and I'm in a financial situation where I can't really afford to buy new CPU at least quite yet so I'd like to keep on playing all the new games, especially since I got new GTX 970 couple of months back, but I'm a bit afraid that I'll run my CPU down.
So PCMR, since there's a lot more tech savvy guys here, can anyone tell me if I should be worried and start to take some steps or if I'm good to continue playing as is.

Also, is there a suggested fan curve for this cpu and combined with a D15?
I'm not new to PC gaming. Over the years I've replaced the occasional parts here and there... built some PCs decades ago...That being said I'm definitely no expert either.
I've only recently started using HWMonitor to view my cpu temps because I just replaced my cpu cooler with a new Noctua NH-L9X65. My main reason for replacing it was noise reduction (on an Acer Nitro 50 desktop with an Intel i7-8700 3.20GHz, GTX 1060 6GB)
The fan is super quiet and I'm really satisfied with the result. The difference is like night and day... I'm a bit concerned with my cpu temps though...
Under load (running a triple-A game nearly max settings), if I look at my "package" temp on HWMonitor, it always averages around 76°C (169°F) which is an acceptable temp from what I've read online... BUT, HWMonitor has a column for "Max temp" which is the highest temlerature the software has detected since it's been launched... I always see a really annoying 92°C (197°F) in that column... but no matter how many times I check, I never actually catch the temp going that high with my own eyes in the "Live" column... it's always between 70°C (158°F) and 80°C (176°F). If I had used a software that didn't have a "Max temp" column, I would have never even known it reached that high and wouldn't even be writing this...
Should I be concerned? (Since my main reason for replacing was noise reduction, I didn't bother to check my temps BEFORE replacing the cooler... maybe my PC has always been running like this 🤷♂️)

Hi I just upgraded from my i5 8400 to a i5 12400f and when I open hw monitor I don't see any temperatures , I only see the utilization tab under "Intel processor". Can someone explain what's happening here? I didn't have this issue with my i5 8400

I've been using CoreTemp to measure the temperature of my FX-8350. I was getting it idling (with a small overvoltage) at between 11-19 degrees centigrade. That can't be right. So I got HWMonitor. I've now got 2 different CPU temperature readings:
Under my motherboard name, it says temperatures and then gives 30 degrees for the processor
Under AMD Fx-8350 it says 'package' and reads 11 degrees.
Now, I'm using a Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E, so I was expecting low temperatures, but 11 still seems too low. It's below ambient. That can't be right, surely? So which temperature reading in HWMonitor am I supposed to take notice of?
The two temperatures on HWMonitor relate to the fact that there are two CPU temperature sensors in your system. The one that is giving you the (probably correct) 30 degree reading is on the motherboard under the CPU. The one that is giving you the 11 degree reading is in the CPU itself.
I had a problem with my CPU temperature sensors and was able to fix it by updating my BIOS-- I would definitely do that if you don't have the latest version.
Before I fixed it, I asked AMD's tech support for help with it, and they suggested that it could be an OS-level issue (requiring a reinstall of Windows).
EDIT: Just to be clear, you're right that the 11 degree output has to be incorrect. :)
Your temperatures(generally) will never be below the ambient temperature of your room. So if you see a reading that is below the ambient temperature, its a false reading.

I'm trying to figure out if there is something wrong with my computer or if it's just a software issue. I started noticing high idle cpu temps in my watercooled build. I'll explain as detailed as possible.
First some info about my build:
cpu: 5950x (not oc'd)
Mb: Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Formula (which is also watercooled)
Gpu: 2 x MSI 24GB D6X RTX 3090 Suprim X 24G
gpu waterblock: EK Quan.Vec Trio RTX 80/90 D−RGB Ni+Ac
cpu waterblock: EK Quantum Velocity D-RGB AMD - Ni+Pl
radiator 1: CORSAIR Radiator XR5 420
radiator 2: CORSAIR Radiator XR7 480
radiator fans: 4 x Noctua NF-F12 PWM 120x120x25
radiator fans: 3 x Noctua NF-A14 PWM 140x140x25
pump: EK Quantum Kinetic TBE200 D5 PWM D-RGB
Liquid: CORSAIR Liquid XL5 1L Premix
If I set my bios to speed up the fans based on the watertemperature then I'm noticing high cpu temps while idle (around 70-80°C). Now I have set my bios to default, all settings standard so now it ramps up a lot more (because it's based on the cpu temp) but the temps are better now.
idle (at 25°C ambient temp):
CPU (hw monitor): 65-75°C
cpu (Tctl/Tdie) (HW Info): 65°C
cpu die (average): 58°C
CPU CCD1(Tdie): 72°C
CPU CCD2(Tdie): 43°C
water temp: 37°C according to Armoury crate
To me these temps are still a bit high for being idle (for standard profiles which are already a bit loud).
My questions:
Isn't it weird that I cant set my bios settings to the silent mode without high idle temps, I really wanted a silent build, hence the overkill on rads.
I just ordered the aquacomputer octo. Will I have the same problem when I want to regulate the fans and pump based on the water temp?

Flow goes from pump - cpu - rad 1 - motherboard - gpu 1 - gpu 2 -radiator 2 - back to the pump
I wanted a silent build but this isn't it.
I am looking at my CPU temps in HWMonitor and I'm wondering which temps are correct. Here's a screenshot with the temps highlighted.
My motherboard is reading a temp of 36c, while the CPU itself is reading a temp of 22c. I should note that Bios reads the same thing as the motherboard reading within HWMonitor.
I just installed a new Noctua NH-U12s and the temps reading in HWMonitor from the CPU are down a good 10-12c. The temps reading from the Motherboard, however, are only down 1-2c.

36 is the temperature from the the board's sensor which is located beneath the cpu. 22 is the temperature of the cpu itself. Amd processors do not report accurate temperatures while idle.
These are two different temperatures. The temperature from the CPU is quite obviously the CPU temperature and I believe that the temperature reading off from the motherboard is the chipset temperature. Not 100% sure on that so anyone feel free to correct me.
Or would you recommend a different program altogether? Please provide an explanation so I know why you're recommending one software over the other.
I just upgraded to a Legion Pro 7i (Gen 8), but I used to use a HP Omen 15, so I'm used to monitoring temperature through the Omen Command Center.
Starting today I noticed that my CPU fan was spinnin way to fast.(almost 1500 rpm, Noctua NH-14s and no programs running) After trying to fix this trough the NZXT app, the Gigabyte app and my bios I did conclude that the fan was ramping up because my bios and Gigabyte's app thought my CPU was running at 90°C while both NZXT and hwmonitor told me my CPU was at 29°C.
Everything I find online would suggest a problem with my CPU temperature sensor, but I have no idea how to check if this is true.
Is there a way for me to check if this is true? And if so how do I get my motherboard to ignore this? Cause the fan is pretty loud at max rpm.
I'm new to this subreddit so I hope my question is clear and complete, if not I do respond fairly quickly.

It is summertime now in canada where I live so I expected high temps, but I was hoping to lower them a bit. I am getting a fan tomorrow I was going to put under my desk to keep my legs cool and my pc too, just keep the air flowing you know.
What exactly are measured in HWmonitor under the following headers?
- System
- PCH
- MOS
- and whats the difference between 'CPU' under the motherboard and 'Package (Node 0)' under the CPU?

HW Monitor is reporting every core of my CPU as 287 degrees C. Obviously this is incorrect and there would clear signs of an issue. Flames being the most tell tale sign.
It’s an old AMD FX-6100 that’s driving a Plex Server. The machine is working absolutely fine, feeding up to 4 1080p streams at once with seemingly no issues. The server is, and has been on 24/7 for almost 6 years except for the usual maintenance.
The question is does the CPU need replacing?
Also as the CPU temps are wrong and if the CPU fan fails would the wrong temp readings prevent the machine from automatically shutting down due to overheating? Now that would be a major fire hazard.

So I recently rebuilt part of my pc due to the cpu having an issue. I've gotten it up and working and installed a few hardware monitors to monitor temp (as I believe that is what was caused the previous cpu to fail).
Now I'm noticing the cpu temp spike on occasion, but not when one would typically expect. It seems to happen a lot when idle/downloading and installing something, but stays relatively consistent when playing games (and rarely spikes above 80, even in higher end games like cyberpunk). Also it seems to spike a bit when initially launching the pc then settles back down. These random spikes when idle are anywhere from 50c to 71c.
I typically use HWINFO to watch my temps, but have always been unsure what temps to specifically clock. Any thoughts on which temps I should pay attention to and what may be causing these spikes?
