Do you guys prefer hydraulic lift or side storage beds? I’m looking to buy something I’ll keep for the next multiple years, so investing probably around $1500-$2000.
Hydraulic pros: -May be able to put bigger items like suitcases -Use all the space
Side drawer pros: -Easier to access
I was looking at wooden side storage beds for the sturdiness. I’ve had plenty of cheaper metal frames and they’ve all started squeaking. The wooden bed at my parents place is sturdy as a rock. With the hydraulic lift, you can’t get those as wooden.
I also keep a weighted blanket, so I don’t know if that would affect the hydraulic lift mechanism.
Curious on thoughts - I’ve been seeing a LOT of hydraulic lift beds pop up recently instead of side storage.

I've been trying to find a bed for my new place and I stumbled upon my dream bed: the ALYA Motorised Storage Bedframe & Adjustable Bed Base Ver. S (Queen size). It has everything I'm looking for:
it's adjustable with all the features I would expect
it has an app so that I can set an alarm for the mornings to wake me up; maybe I can even tinker with it and have it work with home assistant
it's a lift storage bed which is essential; my bedroom is small enough that drawers might be hard to utilize properly
and it's motorized so that I don't actually need to lift it get access the storage
I couldn't ask for any more features. There's one problem though: I don't live in Singapore where they sell this bedframe. I don't actually know how much it would cost to ship to Canada, but I would imagine it would easily double the price. I actually don't even know if it's possible to ship something so heavy overseas. If anyone knows if this is feasible, please let me know.
It's unique enough that I haven't found any equivalent in North America. The closest I've found is the Ergomotion STOW Storage Adjustable Base but even then the adjustments are lacking, it doesn't have app control, and the lift isn't motorized.
So it got me thinking: is there a DIY equivalent? Where I can get one of the more feature packed zero-clearance bases, say for example the Ergomotion Quest 4.0 and put it on top of a hydraulic lift storage bed? There seems to be very few that are motorized in Canada. So I can either try to find a way to do it myself, or just compromise and forget about it being motorized (although it would be ideal to have it since I imagine the adjustable base + mattress would be heavy together).
I haven't come across any one that's talked about this combination before. Is the reason because it's just too dangerous to have the adjustable frame sitting on top when it's being lifted; what if I bolt it down somehow? Is the combination too heavy for a hydraulic storage bed? Is it just a stupid idea in general? Have I set my sights on something that's just unobtainable in North America?
I could really use some advice. Thanks
Hi everyone,
I'm looking for a good lift up bed, preferably made of wood, but I'm open to other options as long as it's in light colors. When I search for lift up beds, all I see are those from Wayfair... Drawers are not enough for me, so I need a lift up bed for around 1000-1200 dollars at most. Have you got any suggestions? (Also, I'm in Toronto.)
Im interested in one of those beds that you can lift the mattress and store stuff under. Has anyone found one that is decent?
Hello,
I might be moving to a small but perfect apartment. I was thinking of investing in a storage bed but the kind with drawers may not work: I doubt the drawers would fully extend in my bedroom. The next option would be the kind of storage bed where the mattress lifts up, has anyone purchased one of these beds? If so what has been your experience? Are they comfortable? Are they easy to use?
Hi everyone!
Located in USA and looking for a king-size hydraulic lift-up storage bed that doesn’t totally sacrifice aesthetics. I’d love something neutral-colored, upholstered, and minimal!
Allewie and SHA CERLIN on Amazon have great reviews (I'm pretty sure it's the same product), but I'm worried they'll look super cheap IRL! I'm eyeing the beige color that looks more like grey in the pictures.
Must-haves:
In-stock and ships to USA
Good under-bed storage height (ideally for suitcase storage)
Supports my 14" thick mattress
Clean, simple design in a neutral-colored fabric (no white velvet!)
Budget: ideally <$600
Bonus: compact enough for small apartments and not crazy expensive
Beds I like but are sold out and/or out of my price range:
Wayfair - Wade Logan Brooklinn Upholstered Platform Storage Bed (perfect all around, but king size out of stock)
West Elm - Emmett Pop-Up Storage Bed
Sundays - Dream Bed and Cloud (pricey and unclear delivery date)
Saatva - Halle Storage Bed from Saatva (gorgeous, but way out of budget!)
Any suggestions or even good/bad experiences with products listed would be super helpful. Thanks so much!
ETA: Location, budget, and links!
Going to replace my Hemnes bed frame with malm for better storage. Is the storage box worth it?
Hey Reddit, I'm hoping you all can help. I'm completely confused on the instructions to this bed build for a hydraulic lift storage bed. I'm trying to figure out which is the proper direction to install my hydraulic pumps. It looks like it shows me two ways in the directions and I'm at a loss. Any assistance would be much appreciated. I don't want to install them the wrong way. Put the mattress on and break the hydraulics or have to pull it all off and reinstall. Thank you in advance for all the help!
Is there a manufacturer in America that sells king sized bed frames that lift up with hydraulics and provide storage underneath the mattress? I have only seen this in Europe from brands like Pikolin which advertises “canapé” bed frames. But, it is always a queen size bed or smaller. In America, I have seen models on wayfair, ikea and amazon which provide storage underneath but unfortunately are only queen size, full or twin bed frames. Could you please let me know where to find one for a king sized bed?
IKEA has one... not sure if it comes in king, but pretty sure queen...
Flou doesn't show it on their site, but they make North American versions of some of their beds that are king size with lift storage. The Nathalie is one of their most famous beds and I'm pretty sure it comes in king with lift storage. Check their store locator to find a local rep.
Looking for a queen size bed that has a spring mechanism to lift up for storage underneath.
Don't see a lot of "high quality" ones.
I see:
-
Bottom of the barrel: random stuff on Amazon
-
Middle of the road: Ikea Malm ($550)
-
Unknown "higher end": Expand Furniture ($2,500)
I heard Ikea Malm breaks down. Little to no reviews on Expand Furniture but it's 5x the price.
Considering just building my own if I can find anything sturdier than Malm with decent reviews.
Anyone found something sturdier than Ikea Malm?
Hello! We have a 21’ Ameri-Light which we love however storage is less than ideal. There is one small exterior access hatch and then about 3 quarters of the bed lifts up for access.
It gets pretty heavy and awkward after a while. Does anyone have any good experiences or recommendations on installing a hydraulic lift to keep the bed propped up?
Thanks!
I think you're looking for "gas struts" and many RVs have them OEM. 20" is about the median size.
Amazon "RV Bed Lift Kit" will give you many options.
I also have an amerilite 198bh and I just added Hatchlift Products RV Bedlift Kit - Queen – Standard Mattress https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KPR2DZI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_l7L.EbAQ6W7FX
It was pretty easy.
We added a memory foam mattress so it was a pain.
We also try to never use that storage for inside use.
Downsizing to a 1BR apartment and need all the storage I can get. Is this bed an eye sore?
Looking for a place to get a solidly built bed with storage drawers underneath. Been to IKEA and am a little skeptical about the build quality. Same for Bad Boy and some of the smaller stores on Kennedy in Scarborough.
Structube quality and price seem like a good mix, but they only have one storage bed design.
Shelter had a couple of good options, but $2000 for a non-solid wood bed seems like a lot. They are certainly in my style wheelhouse though.
EQ3 and CB2 don't have many storage bed options and prices seem a little inflated for what you get.
Any other options I should check out? Looking for a modern or mid-century modern look with a relatively low bed height. Slats are okay, but prefer a flat platform.
I'm looking for something similar to this bed. I'm moving into a tiny room and felt this would be a great solution for storage. Does anyone have experience with this or a similar bed storage solution?
I actually have that same bed. It is in my guest room now though. It's an okay deal for the price that it is at...but I'd say you should go with something a little more expensive or, if $350 is at the top of your price range, then I'd go with a bed with side storage (if your tiny room fits it). What I mean is a bed with drawers on the sides (or even a normal bed frame that you can put boxes/tubs under). The hydraulic lift is neat but too much of a hassle with a mattress on the top. The bed is reasonably comfortable though (if you have a good mattress), but a little cheap looking.
I have this bed which is a platform bed, so no box spring just a mattress, and it has to 2 drawers that are each 27" across, 16" long --into the bed, and 8" deep. There is also room underneath the bed itself if you wanted to store long term stuff.
On another note, since the room is so small, I recommend getting closet organizers. That way you won't NEED a special storage bed.
Hey everyone!
Namaste, salaam!
I'm currently looking to buy or get a queen-sized wooden hydraulic bed for my bedroom, and I’d love some local insights.
Here’s what I’m specifically looking for:
Wood: Preferably Sheesham or Teak (solid wood, not engineered)
Size: Queen
Storage: Hydraulic lift-up storage
Design: Something with a minimal yet a bit of overhead storage—not too bulky or overly ornate
Clearance: Ideally a bit of gap from the floor (if possible) so not much of the dust to accumulate and i could clean underneath.
Budget: ₹45,000 to ₹60,000 depending on quality
Would appreciate suggestions on:
Local furniture stores or wood workshops that can customize
Places you’ve bought from and were happy with (especially good after-sales service)
Trusted carpenters who do high-quality hydraulic fittings and finish
Any markets or clusters known for Sheesham/Teak furniture work in the city
I’ve been browsing the online options (Urban Ladder, Pepperfry, Wakefit, etc.), but I’m open to supporting local makers if they offer good value and better craftsmanship.
Thanks in advance! 🙏
We are considering getting a bed where the platform swings up on hydraulic lifts (like a car trunk) to reveal storage space inside and are trying to figure out whether our current mattress would work.
The bed we're looking at is Ikea's Malm Pull-Up Storage Bed. The web site says it only works with a certain list of mattresses. Our current mattress has the same dimensions and weight as one of those listed, and is approximately the same firmness. Is this enough to determine that it will work?
The list of acceptable mattresses excludes most of the mattresses Ikea sells, and I can't really see from the specs on the web site (which are pretty comprehensive and specific) what exactly the acceptable mattresses have that the others don't. Is there some other attribute that I'm missing that a mattress would have that would affect whether it would work on this bed?
