June 30, 2024New PD image resource: “Public Domain Image Archive”, a curated collection of 10k+ out-of-copyright historical images. Some very cool browsing interfaces! Well sourced, and with good re-usage info.
It's another very useful resource, but still contains some of the same (slightly infuriating) problems which other resources seem to be happy to live with - artists, especially some notable ones, aren't credited, with the images being refereed to as 'by Anonymous', making searches for specific creators hit or miss. If the site is simply reusing information from online sources this is understandable, but still... some of the images are signed. There are also very notable works omitted - a search for "curate's egg" doesn't turn up the source of the saying, although the drawing has been referenced somewhat extensively. A good start, all the same, and it can always improve in future. Really not sure how I feel about the search interface at the moment, though... I'll have to return to the site later and ponder why that feels somewhat awkward. More on reddit.com

So I just discovered the Internet Archive Book Images on Flickr. As I understand, it holds more than 5 million pictures of illustrations taken from books, which is awesome. But I don't understand how to search meaningfully inside such a huge collection. There are no albums, no galleries, and the search function doesn't yield any relevant results. I can't find a way to classify the images thematically. Apparently it's just sorted by "date uploaded".
I guess I could just randomly click on any page and hope I find something useful... but there are 53138 pages. What if I want something specific? What if I want to check a certain category? Maybe there's something about Flickr that I don't understand (as I'm not a regular user)…
So, as it is... 5 million images, and nothing but insects.
How is this collection supposed to be navigated? Does anyone know?

I found a work around for the broken search on the flickr Internet Archive photostream. For example, to search for pictures of dogs there, don't even open flickr. Just type the following URL directly into your search engine: "dog" site: https://www.flickr.com/photos/internetarchivebookimages/ For the search results, toggle to "images" (as opposed to "all"), and the images pop up. This approach is actually much faster returning results than was the search option in flickr when it worked with the Internet Archive image collection.
