r/ipad on Reddit: Ipad Air 6th gen - worth it?
February 12, 2025 -

Hello! I'm currently looking to upgrade from my Samsung tab s6 lite. I'm a hobby artist who does occasional commissions, so procreate looks really enticing to me. Is the iPad air 6th gen worth the 620 euro price tag? Any experiences or recommendations?

Apparently iPad Air m3 is also set out to launch this year as a chip upgrade refresh but it’s not too important but if u want to wait, then u could get the new air

The Air M3 is only a rumour, and it would probably be late Apr/May before you can order it. Though the rumour is possible as it would be a year since the Air M2 was released and the M3 is already a real chip and getting "old" compared to the M4. But then again Apple might decide to hold out a little longer to Sep instead (and bring along a screen upgrade to the chip upgrade. In any case, if you can wait, why not. You will have more time to decide if you want to get an Apple or stick with a Samsung or other Android tablet. I was tossing between a Samsung S10 Ultra, S9 Ultra and M2 Air 13. After a month of "Google research" and trying them out at stores, I ended up with the M2 Air 13, simply because of the ecosystem and the apps are native to tablet, whereas most Samsung/Android apps are native to phones and are stretched out to tablet size. Also, only until recently, Samsung and other Android tablets did not have a clear roadmap for how long their products would be supported or become obsolete, and feature updates were not frequent or at all after release. Even then the M2 is so overpowered for today that it is likely to have a much longer life than the S10U/S9U. The downside is that the Apple Pencil Pro required for the M2 Air is expensive compared to the free S pen you get with the S10/S9. I got a knock off that worked well but does not have proper pressure sensitivity as the genuine thing. However, I found that not many apps used the pressure sensitivity (yet). Procreate does but I haven't bought it yet as I am looking for other alternatives at the moment and drawing isn't my main activity. Another downside of the M2 Air is that the screen is only 60Hz, though it is not noticeable with any app (including gaming) that I have used and compared to the S10/S9, it still looks good to me. The cameras on the S10U/S9U are better spec'd than the M2 Air but then I hardly use tablets for photography. For conference video calls, the M2 Air front camera is better as it is able to centre on you (though that is more software than hardware). Sideloading was a draw card for the S10U/S9U, but I didn't and don't think I would do too much side loading. And if I did, I would do it on my cheapo Lenovo Tab M11 (which comes with a Pen). The Dex feature was another draw card for the S10U/S9U, but there wasn't a way to try it out at the stores and there was very little on Google that demonstrated it extensively, so I was concerned on how it would look with the apps not being native to the tablet, would they look worse when appearing on a monitor? And I already have a mid-high PC and monitor, the purpose of the tablet was its mobility, so I was unlikely to be replacing my PC with the S10U/S9U. It's a pity the Oppo 2 tablet doesn't come with a pen.
