Answer (1 of 2): In spite of the gobbledygook you hear about this stuff, the harder and faster you charge any battery, if the heat in the battery is even moderate, IT SHORTENS THE LIFE OF THE BATTERY! iphone 11 has a 18w limit. it's only the iphone 12 and 13 so far that can take advantage of the 20w. Having said that, it's still a good idea to get the 20w if you want to "future proof" for future newer replacement phones you might get. If you already have the 18w one, just keep that and save ...

This is from over at the Macrumors forum, posting it here to maybe get some more traction.

CDT tested various USB-C PD chargers from 18w to 100w and all chargers charge at around 9V with the exception of the 29w Apple charger which is 14.77V at 1.72A which comes out to 25.40 Watts. A Macrumors user has concern if the 29W charger at 14.77V would cause any harm to the battery, I also has been using the 29W block for the past year and my XS Max battery health is now at 90%.
Would charging at 14V vs 9V make any difference for battery degradation?

Here's an English version of the same article . The iPhone 11 Max Pro charged up to 18W (9V/2A) with its included and most other 18W USB-C PD chargers. With 30W and higher chargers it got up to 22.5W (9V/2.5A) in most cases. So a 30W charger will charge the iPhone 11 Max Pro a bit faster than its included charger. For reference the iPhone 8 through XS models would only get up to 9V/1.66A (15W) with the same chargers. So the iPhone 11 Max Pro does charger faster. The problem with Apple's 29W USB-C power adapter is it doesn't follow USB Power Delivery standards. It has the wrong power profiles. Not supporting 9V (which newer iPhones default to for fast charging). And it supports 14.5V instead of 15V. It would never meet today's USB-IF's compliance standards. There's no reports of it causing problems. But if you own one replacing it with most any other 30W USB-C PD charger will provide as good or better performance with a larger range of devices.
