Hi everyone,
I'm having an issue with the camera on my iPhone 12 Pro Max. The problem occurs when I use the zoom function at 2.5x and above. The image becomes blurry, and I hear a loud, frequent clicking sound coming from the camera.
The camera works fine at 0.5x and up to 2.5x zoom, but as soon as I go beyond 2.5x, the problems start. Given this, I suspect it might be an issue with the telephoto lens.
Has anyone else experienced this? Do you think this could be a software issue, or is it likely a physical problem with the camera? I am currently on iOS 18, but this issue has been persisting since I’ve had iOS 17 (about a 10 months now) so I don’t think it’s a software issue.

The 52mm lens on the 12 Pro has a 1/3.4" sensor with 1.0µm pixel pitch. The 15 base has a 26mm lens with 1/1.56" sensor and 1.0µm pixel pitch. The larger image sensor on the 15 should give slightly better results, especially if the physical lenses have been improved between models. I say "larger" keeping in mind that it's still a very small sensor. It's a shame they didn't make the pixels bigger. After the picture is taken, there's a lot of subjective opinion on what Apple has done with their photo processing over they years, so some would still prefer a picture from the 12 Pro over a picture from the 15 despite the hardware not being as good on the older camera.

15 Plus These are not the best examples, and its a night scene. I know but i’m sitting at a public place with my friend. I didn’t wan’t to take 2x zoomed photos of random strangers with changing scenes. I use 15 plus and my friend uses 12 pro. This was the best i could do where i am.

I am new to iPhone, waiting for my 13 and I was checking last year reviews, in on the reviewer was saying that the 12 Pro had the optical zoom while the 12 didn't.
But according to the specs regular iPhones 12/13 have:

So what is going on?
Having a 2X optical zoom would be great for me, I am used to having none.
In the review though he was comparing the regular 12 and the 12 Pro, the photo made with the 12 was really ugly like it was a digital zoom.
Maybe he was comparing the same level of zoom and with the regular it has to go digital after 2X? but then what's the point of this comparison?

The 2X optical zoom out is the ultra wide lens. The pros have an additional telephoto lens which has 3x zoom in on the 13 Pro or 2x on the 12 Pro or 2.5x on the 12 Pro Max. Any zoom in on the regular ones will be digital.
