We tried sleep training and decided it wasn't for us (but still zero judgement for those who do it, and I'm not willing to argue with anyone here about it) so we will be continuing to co-sleep.

Because of this, our queen bed isn't going to work for our family anymore. My husband wants to buy a king, but I'm curious about a Japanese floor mattress instead. He said he could be game. I like the idea of being able to roll it up and put it away during the day and have more space for *activities* during the day

I also like that they're available made of more natural materials and much less expensive than a king sized bed.

Anyway, anyone have experience with this? Brands you like, how was the lifestyle change etc?

We have two of these for sleepovers. I slept on them a few times. It was not a great experience. Even doubling them up was no help. My hips and back were crying for a regular bed after.

I slept on futons in Japan and then America for about 3 years. What makes a futon work is the floor it sits on. In Japan it's springy tatami mats. When I had a vaulted wood floor under mine in America, it was great. When I had it on carpet over concrete, it was unusable. You will also need to air out the futon not infrequently, which could be an issue depending on your space. Just fyi. I would not go back to a futon. But I am going to get a thick American style futon mattress to have in the nursery for when my toddler wants to snuggle to sleep, once I move my gel mattress off the floor of the nursery and back to my own room. That worked great for us.

Hi, BIFL-ers. Need some advice. Would you buy a Japanese futon (the ones where you lay a tatami mat, then put the futon padding on top) or get a mattress? Which would you get and why? What brand would you recommend? I'm conflicted because I've grown up sleeping only on mattresses and have never tried a Japanese futon, but I know I will be moving places a lot and Japanese futons just offer a lot of portability. I would also want to buy for life because looking at the typical materials for bedding just aren't great for the planet at the end of its life cycle. Thanks!

Most futons are filled tightly with cotton batting which means there's no 'give.' They're like sleeping on a carpeted floor but at least the floor is flat/level. Cotton filled futons will develop lumps from general use and especially from folding. If the cotton futon is filled tightly enough it is extremely difficult or near impossible to remove the lumps. A foam filled futon would be preferable. Both my sister and I had cotton filled futons and hated them to the point where they were headed for the trash. Then we each bought PREMIUM memory foam toppers which are 2.5 - 3 inches thick and simply lay on top of the futon. HEAVEN. All houseguests also report heavenly sleep. I write 'premium' because many products that call themselves memory foam are false claims. They're just ordinary foam. Check the reviews and be certain that you can return it easily. The cost of a cotton futon and memory foam topper will still be many hundreds of dollars less than most premium mattresses. Edit: that futon you linked to is cotton filled, as hard as the floor and will probably develop persistent lumps.

I have a Japanese futon and it's the best thing I ever did for my sleep/back pain. I got the tatami mat with it as well. For my wife and I, there are too many upsides to having a Japanese futon to go back to a traditional western mattress. Life is more enjoyable when things are not heavy.
