My bet right off the top of my head is that you installed them incorrectly. And that most likely they are out of phase. Especially considering how you described the sound. Try balancing from left to right and see if the sound improves and the bass response returns. More on reddit.com

You can't pit an oval peg in a round hole. If you want to cut holes in rear deck where there are none, you'll probably have to remove the rear window, so that idea is a no go.
Go to Crutchfield.com and enter your vehicle info and get speaker sizing info. There are a bunch of possible factory audio system configurations, (dash speaker present or not, premium audio present or nor, navigation present, etc.)
Take time to check as you might buy something that won't work correctly. If you have dash speakers, ignoring them during an upgrade will probably end up with terrible sound overall.

Buy through Crutchfield and you get easy directions. The speakers I took out of my new outback were the worst pieces of shit I've seen in any car I've ever owned. New ones are so much better. More on reddit.com

Ok so I have a factory sound system (old JBL sound in a 2000 Camry) replaced the fronts with some old pioneer and they sound ok for now I'm going to order the JBL stadium GTO 930 6x9 for the rear deck or the GTO 939 not planning on installing any after market amp but may or may not bypass the factory amp with a new carplay head unit . Thoughts suggestions anybody have these running? I'm leaning towards the stadium but not as much info compared to the others. Which would sound better just the way the radio is now.

For me, the best sound is from matched pairs all around. Mismatched speakers just don’t sound good. See what your budget can do by replacing all speakers with the same models. If you plan to not add an amplifier, chose speakers with a sensitivity above 90. High sensitivity speakers will use the limited power from a head unit more efficiently and play louder. Cruthfield has a filter option for speaker sensitivity.

Installed these today. I even soundproofed. I was sorely disappointed. Almost want to switch back in the stock paper speakers! Reviews said these things rocked! Reviews said bass was excellent. All I hear is tinny and muddy.
I remember putting some cheap pioneers in my beater back in HS. No soundproofing, no prep, just slap them in and the improvement was pretty good.
So what am I doing wrong here? U JBL themselves say they're designed for stock radios as well as aftermarket ones/amps. Then other places I've read about this stuff say to have an amp that's 100rms. Then others say it should be a certain percentage of peak power.
So, which is it? And how do I salvage these speakers from sounding like total hot garbage?

I sold JBL for years, they are a very good product. As someone else said try switching the balance from left or right and if you get a sound improvement, then phasing is part of the problem. You said you have already done Sound dampening, which is great. But have you made sure that there is no metal to metal or metal tube plastic contact where your speaker is mounted to the baffle? These speakers are very efficient, so even with the stock head unit only putting out 16 Watts of RMS power the output should be at about 106 dB. which is very loud. You don’t need to worry about DSP, or amplification right now as if the stock speakers sound better obviously, there’s probably something wrong with the installation. People constantly want to blame product when there is a problem instead of considering whether it was an installation/ user error issue or not. Amplification and DSP can be added later on to improve your sound quality. Good luck and let us know what you find out.
