Jetbrains Toolbox and its annoyances

The Toolbox is not supposed to run as admin. Everything is installed in %appdata% and %localappdata%, nothing in Program Files. Something wrong probably happened on your machine. Also, if you don't want to use the Toolbox to manage and upgrade IDEs, you should install IDEs via their installers, not via the Toolbox. Especially if you uninstall the Toolbox after. I would recommend to uninstall everything (IDES and Toolbox), and do things correctly. More on reddit.com

I installed the Toolbox recently and I just uninstalled it. It made my user experience worse.

I have Rider EAP8 installed and I know Release candidate 1 has been released. When I select check for updates in Rider, it tells me the updates are controlled by the Toolbox.
The annoying thing it doesn't even tell me there's an update. At least tell me there's an update and I will manually install it from the Toolbox. I don't want to go to the Toolbox manually to do if there's an update.

I open the Toolbox from the system tray and it shows there's an update for Rider. The update button is disabled. Something about some folder is not writable or readonly. I manually go and uncheck the Readonly in file explorer. Windows sets it back to readonly right away.

Then I find out that the Toolbox needs to run as an admin. It seems there's no way to have the Toolbox autorun at startup as an admin. A limitation in Windows 11 it seems.

I restart it as an admin and the update button is enabled.
I don't see any value from running the Toolbox other than making my life a bit more difficult.

I uninstalled it because it made my ux worse.
Now when I check for updates inside Rider, it tells me RC 1 is available and it installs it for me along with any updated plugins in the same option.

Hey u/THenrich , thanks for writing this up. You hit a real problem, and it's on us. When you install an IDE via the standalone installer, it goes to Program Files. When you later install Toolbox, it detects those existing IDEs and starts managing their updates – but Toolbox is designed to work with installations in your user directory (%LOCALAPPDATA%), where it doesn't need admin rights. That mismatch is exactly what caused the readonly errors and the need to run as admin. This shouldn't have happened silently. The transition from standalone-installed IDEs to Toolbox-managed ones is not handled well today. We should either migrate gracefully or clearly explain what's happening and what your options are. Right now we do neither, this is a room for improvement. On the value question you raised: Yes, Toolbox shows all your recent projects across all JetBrains IDEs in one list – you can open any project directly from the tray icon. It also handles parallel versions (e.g., running a stable release alongside an EAP), and automatic updates in the background. Whether that's worth it depends on your workflow – for a single IDE with one active project, the standalone installer works just fine. If you ever want to try again, the clean path is: uninstall the IDE via Windows uninstaller → install fresh through Toolbox. Your settings, projects, and plugins are stored separately, so nothing is lost. But the standalone experience is fully supported too – it's a valid choice. We're aware this experience needs improvement and it's on our radar. Appreciate you taking the time to write this up.
