Why do people prefer the i5 ThinkPads over the i7s?
The i7 and i5 are the same CPU with a bit more cache and a few more MHz for the i7. The price difference is usually not worth the extra performance. This is the case for all generations that have their i5 and i7 on the same core count. On the flip side, the i7's tend to draw a bit more power, which causes them to heat up quickly and throttle. It has been shown that in many (or even most) cases, the i7 ends up slower than the i5 if the load is more extended. This issue is amplified if onboard (nVidia) graphics is also present. I got this laptop for Christmas ‘21… over the last month I randomly get BSOD (at random or when disconnecting an HDMI / usb device), which I initially thought could have been faulty drivers, but I don’t think that’s the case. I tried a new wireless mouse and my issues seemed to be behind me for a bit. Now tonight, the laptop got another BSOD then the screen was just black. It finally booted up again, then this happened… anyone know what I should do? I’m by no means a computer expert, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why can people not understand that there is no throttling issue in everyday use. Every cpu throttles under 100% load. How often do you need 100% load for a longer period of time? If you don't you will be very happy with the i7. I got it and i see it throttling maybe once a week - simply because you never run on 100% for long

I use a T480s (i5-8250U) with a external GTX 1080 and the only game I have a CPU bottleneck on is Battlefield V! I would stick with a quad core if you want to do any gaming. I upgraded from a T470 with a dual core i5-7300U. The newer CPUs (7th gen and up) have higher single threaded scores which makes productivity work super snappy and very close to the newest CPUs.
For reference, I got a really good deal on my i5-8250U/8GB/256GB T480s for around $450. I upgraded to 16GB/512GB (fast Samsung NVMe) for an extra $90, so I had a total of ~$550 into my computer. I would go cheaper if you are shooting for the best value, like other users have said. I hope this helps!

Usually people don't like the i7s because of the loss in battery life and the heat output. I personally prefer i7 laptops for the added performance, but it's up to the person.
