In trimming down our Windows 11 image for deployment, I'm building a list of appx packages to remove. There's one package I can't for the life of me find what it's actually doing; Microsoft.BingSearch. There's an app in the Microsoft Store titled "Microsoft Bing" that, when installed, has the exact same appx name of Microsoft.BingSearch.
When I look at its description in the store, it says: "Microsoft Bing provides web results and answers in Windows Search. Let Microsoft Bing help you find information directly from the web in Windows Search." But removing the app and restarting, then using the Start Menu/Task Bar search box and typing a phrase, still shows results from the web, making me think that the functionality is actually built in and that this app isn't doing anything.
Does anyone know what this app is actually doing?
We currently use conditional access for apps in our environment. Now we want to introduce the app Bing Search in our company, but when we try to log in to the app with our credentials, we get a CA Error. However, there is no way to exclude this app. Does anyone have an idea for a workaround?
Only workaround for now is uninstalling the app via settings > apps > installed apps by searching for 'Bing' and then reinstalling from the Microsoft store searching for 'web search'. That worked for me.

This is in Windows 11 on Phone Link. It has nothing to do with my phone. What settings in Phone Link must be changed to stop redirecting to Bing Search? It should not do a search and should open the associated Web URL correctly in any browser. If I need to open a file on Google Drive, it should open the ULR where that exists, not start a search for Google Drive.
What atrocious help you gave. It doesn't seem like you understand what I am asking. You are a Support Specialist, yet you tell me to check the settings myself.
Hi Werner777,
Welcome to Microsoft Community.
I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.
It seems like you're experiencing an issue where clicking on a notification in the Phone Link app redirects you to a Bing search instead of the specific item within the app like Google Drive. To resolve this, you might need to adjust the default settings for how links are handled within the app or your device's settings.
Change Default Search Engine in Browser:
- If you're using a web browser (such as Microsoft Edge), check if it's set to use Bing as the default search engine. If so, you can change it to your preferred search engine.
Check App Settings:
- Review the default apps settings on your phone: Ensure that Google Drive is set as the default app for opening specific file types or links that you receive through notifications.
If the issue persists, consider report the problem via Feedback Hub. Microsoft attaches great importance to user experience, you can submit your ideas and suggestions through the Feedback Hub, and the development team will regularly review submissions for ideas or fixes.
Send feedback to Microsoft with the Feedback Hub app - Microsoft Support
Please share the feedback link here after submitting as it will allow others on the forum to vote for your submission, including me. More votes will lead to more visibility and higher priority to the development team.
Remember to check both your browser settings and the app-specific settings to ensure that the correct behavior is configured. Hopefully, one of these steps will help resolve the issue!
Your Sincerely
