The rubbers get stuck to the brass, also they will get caught and stuck in the hot and cold ports when pulling them, also most of the time people don't pull them out when soldering which makes the plastic soft and stick to the brass. Best bet pull grease all surfaces when installing. More on reddit.com

June 12, 2023How do I remove this cartridge, it’s a moen 1222 and the puller wouldn’t work because the stem is broken, the plastic tool also won’t work to twist it. The thing is just too tight, any ideas?

I turned the water off (!), removed the handle, sheath, etc. I managed to get the cartridge clip (?) out from the top.
I’m now trying to pull the cartridge straight out, but I can’t get it to budge.
The whole system of pipes is moving, and I feel like I’m going to create a catastrophic problem if I keep pulling.
Am I missing something that needs to be done first? Am I just weak? 🥺

UPDATE 2 SUCCESS!!! Followed the directions on the cartridge puller, and it came out with just a little effort. What a relief! The new cartridge is now installed and everything is re-assembled. Water is turned back on and tested it out…no more leak! 🤯 Thank you all so much once again! Total cost was around $15 for the puller and $55 for the new 1222 cartridge. I have this moen single handle shower valve in all my bathrooms so I've had to replace one of these 1222 cartridges before which was a nightmare for me. It took me all day trying to pry that thing out using Moen's cartridge removal tool. So this time when I had to do another one, I decided to buy the Flowrite ONA cartridge puller so it would be easier. Long story short, it was fine I got the cartridge out quickly, but the back end broke as you can see in the photo and I had to dig that plastic piece out of the valve. I oriented the cartridge as recommended by pointing the notched end upwards before removing, not sure it makes a difference? Is there something I'm doing wrong? Not sure why these always give me trouble, I couldn't imagine being able to pull one of these out without a removal tool of some sort.

They’re just a pain in general, not the worst but they do get stuck sometimes. If I have my choice I install Delta valves.
