Or is it more important to focus on the viscosity, type of oil (mineral, synthetic...etc) and the frequency of oil changes? And is it better to use cheaper API certified engine oils and do more frequent oil changes or more expensive engine oils but less frequent oil changes?

Nah. Beyond API cert, any factory requirements (dexos, etc), and of course viscosity, I'd generally take a store brand synthetic (Kirkland, Amazon, NAPA) over a name brand conventional or blend. Kirkland is all I use in my daily drivers.

February 2, 2025 - Quaker State is well-known in the automotive world, but when it comes to the lower-end products in its lineup, like the “Advanced Durability” or certain “Economy” versions, it falls short. Experts say these oils can break down quickly, especially in high-mileage vehicles or those that experience heavy driving conditions. Quaker State’s budget options just don’t perform as well as oils from other well-established brands. Why avoid: You might get through a few thousand miles, but you could face higher wear and tear on the engine down the line.

August 12, 2024 -
I work at a parts store and something I’ve always wondered is if there is actually a difference between the oil brands. And I don’t mean between synthetic and synthetic blend and conventional, as I do understand that, I mean like between Valvoline, Mobil 1, and Castrol, etc
Edit: Side question, what about oil filters? An oil filter is an oil filter right? Just probably different filter material at most? Is there a “superior” material?

March 16, 2025 - It even says right on the bottle to use it with caution, so it’s definitely one you should avoid. Not one Xpress Lube Pro motor oil is approved by the API. That, and the fact that it’s not recommended by any professional, should raise red flags. Xpress Lube Pro oil is of inferior quality and doesn’t contain adequate levels of necessary additives. When tested by the Petroleum Quality Institute of America (PQIA), it was also found to contain abrasive materials that could damage an engine. Cruz-In is another motor oil brand that doesn’t meet any standards and will probably not lubricate your engine efficiently.
