If you're not paying for a $2000 MSI laptop or better, there is absolutely zero chance I'd recommend them to anyone. They're going through a lawsuit over the build quality, the thermals, build, and screens are all horrendous below that price point, and their marketing preys on unsuspecting consumers. but I see some decent stuff like the heatpipe idk what's decent about a heatpipe, every laptop has heatpipes. MSI's thermal solution on their budget laptops are horrendous, with thinner and fewer heatpipes, worse fans, and more. If you can't run a 4050 above 60w, you know you have a problem with engineering. Just pay the money and get a proper gaming laptop, not a "wish" one They're more budget-friendly and offer tons of options compared to other brands but would you be able to tell me the difference between a gf63, an alpha, delta, or bravo? cyborg and katana are two more. MSI floods the low end market with this crap. Answer from RicoViking9000 on reddit.com

r/GamingLaptops on Reddit: What do you guys think about MSI?
October 30, 2023 -

In recent years, like around 2018-2019, MSI laptops got super popular in my country.

So, why the hype? Well, there are two sides to the story:

On the plus side:

  • They're more budget-friendly and offer tons of options compared to other brands.

  • MSI is known as the go-to "gaming" brand for PC parts, so folks assume their laptops are gaming-ready too.

But here come the downsides:

  • After a while and based on reviews, it seems MSI laptops tend to break down faster. Some say it's issues with the outside, like hinges and the laptop body, or inside problems like motherboard failures. The outside problems are a hot topic on forums.

  • Some of us felt that their build quality wasn't great.

  • Customer service and after-sales support have been a letdown, with limited service centers and long RMA times, often 1 to 3 months.

Back in the day, I was skeptical about MSI laptops. But now, I need a budget-friendly one (no rush), and I've got around $600 to $1000 to spare.

For the lower budget, I've got my eyes on the MSI Bravo 15 B7ED, packing an R5 7535HS and an RX6550M.

After watching some videos, I don't think it's as bad as I once thought. It's made of plastic, but I see some decent stuff like the heatpipe.

So, what's your take on MSI laptops these days? Any recent bad news like in 2018? Those of you who've had an MSI laptop for at least a year, any issues to share?

Thanks guys

r/MSILaptops on Reddit: Why do people not like MSI and their laptops?
February 9, 2025 -

I’m new to Reddit still but have posted a few threads in this sub-Reddit as I’m having a slight odd sound with my hinge and I see looking at posts this isn’t unusual…

So far though, (not related to that issue), I’ve had good a good experience with tech support with knowledgeable staff helping with driver issues etc.

The price of my laptops were good, the specs are brilliant on the inside and there’s no coil whine unlike other brands I’ve come across and rarely any software issues - one company I used before when updating BIOS on new laptop would brick it through their own software!

That’s why I’ve settled on MSI every time.

Yeah it’s not acceptable about hinges going so quick, is that the only major problem with MSI?

This isn’t a fanboy post, I’m just a bit of a noob and trying to understand why people are saying don’t buy MSI on an MSI subreddit.

I am slightly regretting buying a new MSI laptop with better specs last week and now the older MSI laptop hinge is starting to make a funny sound. 😅

Cheers!

People like overreacting on the internet and pretend the cheap models from other brands don't have cheap hinges, but that's not the case. The more expensive MSI laptops are generally pretty solid, performant and durable, the bad rep comes from users who buy the cheapest stuff, leave it on the floor and in the dust, open the lid from the sides and then complain online. The truth is, especially when it comes to gaming laptops, a sizeable chunk of the userbase are greasy animals with little concern for the device they purchased... Until it breaks. Then it's a tragedy and MSI should be ashamed of their products etc....

I have two MSi laptops and can honestly say I’ve never had an issue with either. One work issued, the other I bought. The first is a Katana 17.3” 3060 that is used constantly at work. Never had a single issue with it or the hinges to be fair. I always open from the centre up and tbh, only close the lid every few days. But, no problems in the 2 1/2 years I’ve been using it. This laptop is left flat on the desk aswell. It’s a really nice laptop with a great panel. I then got myself a Vector 4080 model for my own personal use; gaming and FL Studio audio editing. Again, no issues. I do have this on a laptop stand to allow airflow and am rarely getting above 80degree on the cpu temp. Again I mainly leave the lid open and close once a few days (though I understand the hinges on the are much better than the cheaper laptops). So yeah, I don’t know what people are doing to mess up the hinges so quickly, or what people are doing to ruin their laptops. You have to bear in mind also, people will only post on Reddit when they have a problem (of their own doing usually) as they are seeking a fix, you won’t hear loads of people using MSi laptops with no issue. That’s just the way it is. So yes, I personally love MSi laptops and my next one will almost certainly be an MSi.

Hi! I don't know a ton about computers or laptops, so any help would be appreciated.

I am looking at an MSI Thin Gaming Laptop with these specs:

15.6"

Intel i7-13620H

16 GB RAM

1TB SSD

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050

I am a writer, but also don't go out too much, and would still like a laptop so I can travel. My desktop is old, and I'm looking for a laptop that can run DS and GBA Pokémon games. The one Steam game I've been playing a lot recently is Phasmophobia, and I usually don't play anything too crazy like AAA Shooters.

I see some bad things like battery life and Cooling issues, but I don't plan on gaming on it all day, and it will still be plugged in most of the time. Should I get it or are there more issues with this brand I don't know about?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Im looking to get a new laptop mainly for trading and some light gaming, but I remember reading that MSI used to be notorious for having crappy hinges that would break, and really poor repair services. Have these aspects improved? My last laptop was the Clevo M860TU, a 2009 laptop :/.

Im eying the MSI stealth. I dont get why its so much more expensive than other models like the leopard and say the pulse series. The only things I see as an improvement over the "lower" models is that the GS77 has a larger battery and a 1440screen instead of just a 1080p one. prices jump nearly 800 dollars more for comparable models (17inch)

As the title says, I bought an MSI laptop in 2019, (specifically a gp63 leopard 8re), but I'm planning on upgrading to a new one this black friday if I find a good enough sale.

But I've been watching a lot of videos about the best gaming laptops this year and there's barely any MSI laptops, it's mostly ASUS and LENOVO, is there any reason why? Did MSI laptops got more expensive, less quality or just not worth it compared to these other brands?

And if so, is LENOVO a good alternative to switch from MSI? I really liked MSI as the brand of my main laptop, but if this has changed in the last few years I don't want to miss out just by staying with the same brand for the rest of years, so would love to hear other's opinions

MSI makes good mid-range and high-end laptops. Never buy the cheapest series like Katana. I also have a MSI laptop and I am on the MSI laptops subreddit and about 85% of the problems there are related to Katana, Thin, Cyborg. Among the options you presented, the best is Crosshair. I have an MSI Pulse C1V and it has the same case and cooling system as Crosshair. The case is well assembled, does not creak or bend, metal lid, everything feels solid. The cooling system is also excellent. It coped with the 4070, which consumed 115-130w in TLOU constantly and did not allow it to heat up above 72 degrees. The processor in the same game consumed about 40-50w and did not heat up above 80 degrees. Therefore, this cooling will easily remove 150-180w of heat. The only thing that confuses me is the screen in Crosshair. It is worse than in my Pulse, but still good, but 2k resolution is too much for 4060. True, you did not write for what purposes and games you need a laptop. Sword is worse in quality, although it looks like it has the same case, but this is not so. The quality of the case is worse. And its screen, although full hd, which is good for 4060, but its color gamut is terrible and much lower than 100% srgb

MSI does tend to cut corners on their lower end laptops. Anything that has the same chassis as the Sword or Katana should be a hard pass for either: Bad screen or Bad hinges. Hinges are bad because there's too much tension on one small area, which could be shaped down to bad design or hardcore cost cutting. The screens tend to be bad because they use cheaper TN panels, despite the marketing trying to push "IPS Level" as a thing. Please, please don't underestimate the value of "100% sRGB", having a screen with good colours is very very important. This is like going to the electronics store and comparing a cheap $99 phone's LCD screen to an expensive phone's AMOLED. Only the higher end Raider / Vector / Titan have solid build quality. If you HAD to choose one of the three, I would choose the first one, primarily for the screen that isn't awful. The Sword has an awful srgb rating. (65%, as it uses the same panel from the GP68HX Vector) The Katana also shares a bad screen, next to the hinges. Unfortunately the Crosshair may share the hinge problem, as this option uses a very similar design to the GE66 Raider. If I were you, I'd look for an alternative. Something like a Lenovo Legion or LOQ if possible, maybe even a laptop with a system integrator's name, as they tend to be built by reputable companies such as Clevo or Tongfeng.

I’ve owned a low end MSI (a GF63 Thin) for about 5 years now. It’s been through a lot in that time, and still runs just as well as the day I got it. I’m upgrading soon, and I’m kinda shocked that it’s considered a bad laptop model and that MSI isn’t really held in any positive regard. Should I upgrade to a model from a different manufacturer?
