I am looking to buy wireless headphones with ANC that could also be used wired when I can if that creates better sound quality.
A top priority is durability. I am annoyed that I am back in the market so quickly after the connections on my V-Moda headphones went out. That is part of the reason I won't be buying V-Moda again despite their loyalty discount program.
I also don't want to fiddle with the setup too much. I am using an iPhone mostly (but also sometimes play music from my Lenovo laptop) and would prioritize whichever one works best out of the box with an iPhone (I do not want to buy AirPods Max). I'm willing to download an app and do some setup to improve audio quality, but the less, the better for me.
As far as ANC goes, most of my use will be in an office with a moderate level of background noise. But it would be nice if they could also handle travel noise relatively well.

Got TaoTonics Bh090 Noise Cancelling Headphones for $75 (sale for $50) because I saw they had great reviews for their price. I need ANC because I'm moving in with my GF and we both WFH, and she talks all day and I'm a developer....
The TaoTronics are disappointing after watching reviews on YouTube about how great they were.
Sound quality is worse than my 1st gen airpods (less bass, and that 'surround sound' feeling)
Noise cancelling is not nearly as good as I thought. doesn't do enough really.
I'm okay with paying up to $400 and came across Bose 700 - but are they worth what I'm looking for? Is the ANC good enough to justify it? I'm fine with my airpods, so this investment is solely for ANC while WFH in an office with my GF

I'd say they're pretty good. I got mine last month and have been loving them. I also bought them after the Sony WH1000XM4's came out if that gives some context. XM4's are their biggest competitor. Are they worth the big price? For me they are but some people just don't care for it. I'd say it would be a big step up from your Airpods and the Taotronics obviously. They're incomparable to Taotronics. The build is excellent, and they are crazy comfortable. I'd sooner have them off than off, they just feel really nice. The ANC will block out pretty much all low frequency sounds and stuff like ambient TV noise, but you might need to have music going quietly to completely block out your girlfriend (if she's right beside you, I mean), in another room or away a bit she'd probably be completely blocked out or nearly so. Either way, these are pretty well the best you're gonna get for headphones to block out your girlfriend. Just about the competition for a second, because a lot of people have mentioned the XM4's. Personally, I went with the Bose because the Sony's are filled with a bunch of features I don't necessarily care for (and that raises the price up), and with the Bose having a more comfortable build from what I've seen, a higher quality build for sure, and the ANC being nearly identical, I went with the Bose. I also like Bose's implementation of conversation mode more. However, the Sony's probably have more bass, which is something you mentioned. It seems the Bose go for details more than the Sony, but I find my Bose having enough bass. The soundstage (that surround sound effect) and separation is also good on the Bose. Overall, sound and ANC wise they beat out the Airpods and Taotronics, same as the XM4's, and they beat out the XM4's in comfort and build imo. The Bose aren't necessarily better than the XM4's, or vice versa, but for some people one would be the better choice than the other, and for me I think the 700's were the best choice. On a side note, be careful playing music loudly on airpods to drown out your girlfriend. Airpods have an open ear design so they let a lot more sound in than other headphones and earbuds, so it takes louder music to drown sound out, and listening to music that loud for a long time will screw up your ears (I have a constant ringing in my ears now). Then also, consider the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds. Better sound than your Airpods, and will have excellent ANC. They're also cheaper than the 700's. They're really new, but from the reviews I've been seeing they have the best noise cancelling out of any earbuds on the market, which is impressive. Huge upgrade from airpods. Oh, also, you might be able to try them on in a store depending where you live. Where I live I was able to try them on at Staples.

Get a wh-1000xm4 instead. The bose 700 has firmware problems till now. The Sony also has a more enjoyable sound signature

Hi,
I've been shopping for a pair of headphones to take calls with. I'm primarily outside traveling over the train/subway, and it gets very noisy for the person on the other end of my phone call. I've tried the Sony XM4 headphones, but unfortunately the noise cancelling doesn't transfer over to the other person. They end up hearing all of my background noise.
The Bose 700s seem to be good for taking calls, but my question is does the noise cancelling transfer over to the other person on the call so they don't hear the background noise?

No the noise cancelling works for the speaker not for the microphone. There’s some noise filtering on both headphones but it won’t block out loud noise.

if you have an iOS device you can enable noise cancellation for any phone call on the phone itself, i'm sure the android/samsung phones also have an alternative.

It’s been 5 years since I’ve bought this NC 700 after a friend suggested this model to me in 2020 during the pandemic. Let me tell you straight off - It’s the best investment I’ve made. Since it’s purchase, I’ve been using it everyday for work and about 8 months as my daily driver for music listening sessions before getting the AirPods Pro (for it convenient size).
I been working over the phone with clients countless number of times in unusual locations (bus, construction sites and many more) each time the nose cancelling of this headset left them no clue. The sound quality during a call is amazing and listening to music is a pleasure. After five years, i’m getting 16 hours of battery life compared to 20 when it was new and had to replaced the ear cushion only once so far (replacing again next month).

I traded “up” to the QC Ultras and regret it. The only thing better on the Ultras to me is the Bluetooth support. My Nc700s cut out when using two Bluetooth devices. The build quality of the NC700s is way ahead of the Ultras in my view. They also sound the same to me, minus Spatial Audio, which I don’t use other than movies.
