The first 10-characters (i.e., model and type) stamped on your engine will look like this: Please Note: If the model & type numbers on your Briggs & Stratton engine are only 9 characters, please enter a 0 (zero) at the beginning of the model number.

The Model, Type, and Code numbers, stamped directly into the engine, are used to identify our engines. Engines used in lawnmower applications usually have these numbers stamped directly into the blower housing, muffler heat shield, or a few inches above the spark plug.

The ID tag is the easiest way to identify a vintage Briggs engine. When you encounter an old engine with no ID tag or numbers on the housing, there are other ways to determine what year and model it is.

There are no numbers stamped on top of this one. I have seen it before on others. I read on the A.S.E.C.C. (Antique Small Engine Collectors Club) that they didn't use a code number until 1965. I also read on there that you can figure out how old a engine is with the model and serial number,,on their site.

February 26, 2013 - It seems rather too small in diameter to be an oilbath type, but I'm certainly no expert. ... Model Y engines often face carburetor flooding and spark plug fouling during restoration. To identify your Briggs Model Y engine year, check the Sears and Roebuck tag for serial numbers.

The model number will be 11 or 12 digits and can be found in one of many locations, including: by the starter, on the cylinder shield, on the metal shield, on the valve cover, above the spark plug, in front of the engine, above the muffler, or on the fuel tank.
