My wife and I purchased a new construction home and have the option of having a carpet pad w/ moisture barrier installed (for a fee of $600). I know almost nothing about the topic so was hoping for some insights.
Is a moisture barrier recommended? I’ve seen some conflicting messaging about how useful moisture barriers are for carpet, but thought the fine folks of r/homeimprovement might have better insights. fwiw i have a 3 year old and 9 month old who are constantly spilling stuff ....

Yes, get the thickest pad with a moisture barrier. Especially with kids of those ages that spill a lot. Keep in mind the comfort level as well and go for the pad that's going to feel the best for crawlers, and kids play. I went through this same debate years ago and ended up forking over the extra $. Had young kids at the time and spill clean up was a cinch.

Not sure how much pad you need but that seems like a lot for a pad upgrade. Make sure they tape the seams with moisture barrier tape. Flooring contractor here. It is worth it though as I sell to my customers all the time when they have a busy house.

We have about 1K sqft that we need to recarpet (an upstairs bedroom area, hallway, and stairs). Carpet is old, nasty, and worn. Was put in probably 20 yrs ago by prior owner and now we've lived with for >15 years.
We currently have a small dog (<5 lbs), and he is known to pee inside when anxious or when we just miss the fact that he has to go. The dog is 7 years old and I expect this will continue for the remainder of his life, who knows, maybe get worse. He's such a small dog his pee spots are small but over time it's just a lot and really gross.
I've actually never bought carpet and don't know where to start. I just know I want the best pet urine/best cleaning carpet possible. Budget is flexible and I'd gladly pay top dollar for a padding/carpet that is amazing for pet urine/cleaning.
What things should I look for? Specific brands, technologies, install techniques, stores (box or local)? I'm open to any and all advice.

Shaw makes a pet friendly carpet , well let’s put it this way your dog is still using it as a bathroom so there is no such thing imo. Why not do some glue down plank throughout way more pet friendly and it won’t be as gross.

We had an older small dog and just used baby diapers. Put them on backwards so the tummy Velcro is on the backside. Use scissors to cut a small hole for the tail, once you get the hang of it you don't need to measure.
