Standard Deviation Calculator
In cases where every member of a population can be sampled, the following equation can be used to find the standard deviation of the entire population: For those unfamiliar with summation notation, the equation above may seem daunting, but when addressed through its individual components, this summation is not particularly complicated. The i=1 in the summation indicates the starting index, i.e. for the data set 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, i=1 would be 1, i=2 would be 3, and so on. Hence the summation notation simply means to perform the operation of (xi - μ)2 on each value through N, which in this case is 5 since there are 5 values in this data set.

What does a standard deviation of 1 mean?

If we're in front of a normal distribution, a standard deviation of 1 (σ = 1) means that 68.27% of the distribution values lie within one standard deviation from the mean. In mathematical notation: Pr( μ-1σXμ+1σ) ≈ 68.27%.

How to calculate the standard deviation of the sample mean?

The formula to find the standard deviation of the sample mean is:

σX̄ = σ/√n

where:

  • σX̄ – Standard deviation of the sample mean;
  • σ – Population standard deviation; and
  • n - Sample size.

We previously said that if we know the mean of the sampling distribution (μX̄), we also know the population mean (μ), as they're equal (μX̄ = μ). In practice, we never know μX̄, but we can estimate it using the sample mean ().

σX̄ indicates how approximates μ. The smaller σX̄, the nearest μ can be from our estimate. As σ is constant, increasing the sample size is the only way to diminish σX̄. Therefore, increasing n is a way to reduce our estimations' sampling error.

The Population Standard Deviation Calculator is used to calculate the population standard deviation of a set of numbers (Step by Step). The population standard deviation measures the variability of data in a population. It is usually an unknown constant. σ (Greek letter sigma) is the symbol for the population standard deviation. The following is the population standard deviation formula: Where: σ = population standard deviation x1, ..., xN = the population data set μ = mean of the population data set N = size of the population data set

February 24, 2016 - The confidence interval provides you with a set of limits in which you expect the population mean to lie. A study aims to estimate the mean systolic blood pressure of British adults by randomly sampling and measuring the blood pressure of 100 adults from the population. From their sample, they estimate the sample mean to be 70mmHg and the sample standard deviation to be 8mmHg. Using this information the 95% confidence interval is calculated as between 68.43 and 71.57mmHg.
