If such a light takes 3 AA, I put in a dummy AA, because the runtime five-folds (at the cost of lower brightness), and you have a clear indication when the cells need to be replaced since it won't light up when the two cells have run down to 1v. (mind that with multi-color strings, blue LEDs will cut out earlier due to their higher forward voltage) With 3 AA/AAA the cell with the lowest charge can potentially drain under 1v (or even negative voltage), while the LED still emits light, so I don't like these. I have a lot of small LED strings I use for the holidays that I am getting out of storage. I normally just buy cheap store-brand batteries and it gets me through the holiday, but then I wind up with a bunch of batteries going to the recycle drop off.
Most all of the strings take 2 or 3 AA or AAA batteries. I have a fair amount of Amazon rechargeables for things like remotes and game controllers, so I was thinking of getting more and not having to worry about so much battery waste.
Go figure, almost all of the LED battery packs say to not use them. Is it really that big of a deal for such low-draw devices? Is this going to be a "your lights will never be as bright" vs "fire hazard"? How can a game controller or TV remote be fine with these batteries but a 10-light LED string from the dollar store not?

TV remotes use the battery sparringly. in theory they will last longer in remotes than in "always on" string. fire hazard is silly. "not as bright" is a matter of opinion of what is bright enough.

Yes, yes you can. If you dismantle the device is uses a single AA 1.2v rechargable battery. I was worried about replacing the battery with a standard AA 1.5v but it has given me no issues. If you're tech savvy enough, you can take some wire, contacts and solder to make a parallel set of 4 AA's.
