Romantic music can most succinctly be characterized as an exploration of extremes. Tempo fluctuation, dynamics, instrument range, orchestral size, instrumental variety, and harmonic complexity. It was a growth from and rebuke of the constraints of the Classical period, which was itself a rebuke of the excesses of the Baroque.
